I did it once too.
I had FM'd the people I was close to about leaving due to an incident of harassment.
One of those posters took it upon themselves to bring the situation to light on the boards and it had everyone questioning what had happened.
Instead of letting rumors run wild, I decided to address it publicly so it would die down.
It did. I left. I came back about a month later after I had time to gain perspective.

If I ever decided to leave, I'd probably send an FM to those who I "know" and thats it. I don't know if I'd ever start a post. Everyone on here is entitled to their opinions and should not get upset or offended if no one agrees or doesn't reply to their posts.
Well said. I've never really left, but there's been times where I have taken a break for a few days from the boards and just FM'd my friends. I didn't make an announcement

I never understood it either. I've slowly phased myself out of LIW but it's because I'm married and really just don't have much to say anymore about that topic. The friends I've made there know where I am and how to contact me.

If I was truly done for good my "goodbye" post would not be sweet and sorrowful. I would say all the things I have kept inside. I was on this chat board that had to do with aquariums and these people had more drama than I have ever seen! It was about fishtanks for crying out loud!!! So I told them all off and never looked back.

it's a cry for attention and to let the world know the "injustices" that have been done to them.
I've taken a couple of short breaks from this site..didn't tell anyone, no one actually noticed, and I came back when I was ready. Granted, the longest only lasted a week!

I had a similar incident on a dog-related site. Stuff got ugly & alot of the people I knew IRL. They were saying nasty stuff about me & making it look to others like I was abusing my dogs. I was really ticked off about the lies so I went off & for the whole whopping 24 seconds it was posted (Admins deleted like it was on fire) I let them have it
