Leaving for Big Island and Kauai in Two Weeks - Anyone have Must See's / Do's??

Ahh, in less than three weeks (18 days to be exact Chat Icon) DH and I fly out to Hawaii Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyway, we're going to Big Island and Kauai. I've got quite a list going for each but figured it couldn't hurt to post and ask if anyone has any must see's or must do's for either island.

We WERE until a freaking helicopter had to go and crash in Kauai a few days ago Chat Icon I know the likelihood of it happening again right away isn't great but since that crash happened in March, which is THE worst month of the year for my family for some ungodly reason (heck, you know Chat Icon ) and it's so close to when we're going, I'm being a big fat baby and told Brett no way Chat Icon

And those volcanoes are one of the reasons I want to go to Hawaii at all Chat Icon I'll def be there! TY Chat Icon

ETS: Hey! I just realized we swapped honeymoons for our 2nd anniversaries Chat Icon You're going on the Med. cruise soon right? Too funny!

I know, and actually the man was from Valley Stream (son went to school with Keryn), what a horrible story. Chris said he will NEVER go on a helicopter again.

And yes, we are switching and I can't wait! You will adore Hawaii. Can you believe it's been 2 years?

I probably should have FM'd this lol!Chat Icon

We went to Kaui. I would totally be freaked out about going on the helicopter. I freaking out on the way there but once we got up in the air it was AMAZING! One of the best things we did. I know what just happened is scary but seriously you should go Chat Icon You will NOT regret it!

We also went snorkeling! We drove up Waimae (spelling).

Where are you staying?

Definitely take some kind of tour of the Napali coast (in Kauai)...we did it by helicopter, but I know they've been having some trouble with that lately. They also have boat tours and DH did one that took you into caves and onto beaches only accessible by boat.

Otherwise, Kauai is very relaxing. There is hiking if you are into that...

You'll love it there!!

Re: Leaving for Big Island and Kauai in Two Weeks - Anyone have Must See's / Do's??

Thank you all for your suggestions!

I think since we nixed the helicopter tour we're going to do a catamaran tour for Na'pali Coast.

Thank you for the suggestion of the noodle shop - we're totally looking for local food places, esp Asian food.

I would actually suggest taking the Zodiac boat tour of the Na'apali Coast (you're less likely to get seasick and you can go in and out of sea caves). We went with Cap't Andy's company. Great time!

Also on Kauai, make sure to:
- visit Hanalei Bay and take a surf lesson;
- eat one special meal at Roy's (in Poipu) - order the chocolate souffle

On the Big Island, go the the four Seasons hotel one day for brunch and get a couples massage while you're there. So worth it!

Have a wonderful trip!

Kuaui is just beautiful and relaxing - we rented bikes for a nice day out.

The Beach House restaurant is pretty good and right on the beach - you can eat there and watch the sunset.

Princeville Resort in Kauai has the best brunch with an amazing view. You have to get there early if you want to sit outside.

don't miss the napali coast in kauai. we did it by boat. it was a sunset snorkling dinner cruise. not a great spot for snorkling - kinda rough and merky. but amazing views and the sunset was wonderful. definitely recommend it. lemme see if i can find a pic.

I second the Beach House. Its on Poipu Rd in Poipu if I remember correctly. You will see the most incredible views from there. Food is very good too!

We stayed at the Princeville - brunch was excellent. Also make your reservation for Beach House ahead (as others have said) We tried when we got there and couldn't get anything.

That is were we stayed for our honeymoon!! It was beautiful! Go there for the Lua they have the best!!

Also don't even do the helicopter tour waste of money and the one that crashed is the one that my husband and I did! Not only that when we were there for our honeymoon the day before we were going up another one crashed and died!! We were so scared!!! save the money and go and do something else!!

Yes beach house down by Poipu Beach

The Beach House is amazing but definitely make reservations. Sunset is great to watch from there and it's fun to watch the surfers right there on the beach.

I'd also recommend Wailua Falls (they're the ones seen in the intro to Fantasy Island). Here's another pic. This is making me very nostalgic and envious :) I want to go back.

Totally can't remember the name of the restaurant, but there is a Japanese restaurant along the main north/south road from Poipu Beach that it to DIE for! The guys who worked at our hotel told us about it - the sushi was amazing and it was cheap! I know it's in Lihue and it's on the right side of the road driving north - sorryChat Icon

You can do a zodiac tour of the Napali Coast in Kauai - it's a spectacular experience being on the water and seeing the unbelieveable landscape. Have a fantastic time!Chat Icon

Re: Leaving for Big Island and Kauai in Two Weeks - Anyone have Must See's / Do's??

I copied and pasted this from another thread:

I Looooooved Kauai!
We rented a car... we stayed near Poipu beach. We spent one day driving to the Na Pali coast (and stopping at everything that looked cool on the way, caves, beaches, etc.), then we went hiking there and went to the beach/snorkeling there. Another day we drove the oppositte direcrtion and went to weimea canyon and then found the secluded Private beaches near the other side of the Na Pali coast & barking sands beach. We also did the helicopter tour and a Kayak/Rainforest tour which was awesome! We kayaked down a river and went for a hike in the rainforest, we saw the waterfalls from Indiana Jones and did a rope swing/jump, and we saw the fields from Jurassic Park. But we got tons (I mean like 60 each) mosquito bites.

There are some pics on the orig. thread
