Leaving NYC DOE

I taught in NYC for six years and recently accepted a position in LI. What do I have to do, in terms of the NYC DOE? If I resign, do I lose my file number and my tenure status (I'm not anticipating ever wanting to go back to NYC but I guess you never know)? How do I get paid for the sick days I've accumulated? Do I have to do anything with the UFT as well?

Thanks!

Re: Leaving NYC DOE

i don't know about your tenure status and all that as I left the DOE untenured...

but you do have to transfer your NYC retirement/pension stuff over to the NYS system. FOr some reason, NYC has it's own retirement system. your new disitrct will be putting your pension money and contributions, etc. into the NYS system.

You have to fill out transfer paperwork and all your years in the city will transfer over, count towards retirement, etc. All the money you and the city put aside will also transfer over.

ETA: they sent me a check for the sick days i did not use.

omg, THAT is why I got a 1200.00 check when I left NYC 6 years ago. I had a ton of sick days left, and I just thought they screwed up and sent me another paycheck.

HA! My guilt is gone now... I thought cashed a check that I shouldn't have!

Re: Leaving NYC DOE

Maybe you can take a leave? And then resign after a school year?

Re: Leaving NYC DOE

you have to resign- you can only take a leave if you havent gotten a job anywhere else. You have 5 years to rescind your resignation.

you are entitled to half of the days that are in your CAR. You get them in installments. You keep tenure in a sense that it will only take you 2 years to get tenure in your new districr- if its a tenure track position!

Good Luck!!!

If you have your UFT rep's number I would call them too!

Ahh, I see. My Asst. Principal was very adamant about me not resigning from NYC just in case, and she said I had 5 years to do it. What you say makes more sense - that I have to resign, and then have 5 years to change my mind (not like I'm expecting to!).

One more question: Do I have to do the resigning in person? If so, where? I live an hour and a half from the City now.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Re: Leaving NYC DOE

You have to send a signed letter of reccomendation to your principal- he/she then sends it to the DOE. I mailed one in.

Technically if you were to resign you were have to supposed to have done so by July 30th- they are now requiring 30 calendar days. But supposedly nothing will happen if you dont give them the 30 days- just a possible "alert" on your DOE file should you try to go back to the city.

There is more info on the UFT website- type in "resign"
