Increase your potassium intake! Eat a banana and that should help

Im on low carb, cannot have bananas.....

Has anyone heard of drinking tonic water for it? My mom used to tell me that worked for her, and I didnt know if it really worked....Or if it just worked for her....

You will be more to them on a low carb diet. I answered your post on LIW.

I am prone to get them. They are awful and have shot me out of bed from a dep sleep. I inherited it from my mother and it largely stems from lack of potassium in your diet (which you might have now if you are on low carbs). When your muscles are ready to contract potassium flows in and that interaction causes the muscle to relax.

Walk on it while eating a banana or eat a handful of salty pretzels.

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

I get really bad leg cramps that wake me too. I usually massage it and take advil in the morning for the soreness. It definetly is related to Potassium. I also get them a lot in the winter when it is really cold

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

I have to say this sounds a little dangerous.
If you're getting leg cramps due to lack of potassium (as many have suggested) then you may be doing damage to other parts of your body too---specifically your heart. Your heart needs potassium to work properly.
You should see a doctor just to check things out.

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

Ugh I cannot take advil either lol - alergic

I am thinking about taking calcium and potassium supplements, along with a daily multi vitamin, to make up for the foods that I cannot eat

My dad was getting severe leg and foot cramps. His doctor told him to take vitamin E, and they went away almost completely.

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

I guess a charlie horse could be a name for them....

I just posted on the lowcarbeating.com site about this and I was told it happens a lot to people on low carb diets that do not take supplements.

I was told to take calcium, potassium and a multi vitamin daily...

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

If you are on low carb drink a LOT of water. One reason you may be having muscle cramps and back/joint pain is because you are dehydrated.

Getting up and walking on it, was the only thing that worked for me. Messaging it after helped when I would feel it start to cramp again.

Re: Leg Cramps - Muscle Cramps

when will this wierd feeling in my leg go away? Last night I found it hard to fall asleep, because no matter how I lay in bed my calfs were feeling really wierd. I guess the muscle was still sore.

Is there anything I can put on them to make them feel better, like heat? Or do I have to just let them heal on their own?
Thanks,
Scott

Did web md offer any advice? Did the advil help at all? Maybe try taking one just as you are going to bed

Try heat, stretching the area, and massage.

I am going to use heat tonight, I have been massaging it, and I just started stretching it.

How long do I stretch it for at a time?

scott,
when i was on low carb (atkins) i got about 3 leg cramps per night! what i did was i took my multivitamins and bought some potassium pills and took them together. that seemed to solve the problem with the leg cramps for me. be careful....too much potassium is not good for you either. i took about 100mg every day then i took it every other day.

when i got leg cramps when i was sleeping....i stand up right away, it goes away immediately!
