Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

I have been getting leg cramps almost every night or every other night. The other night I woke up with cramps in both calves. I know pregnant women experience this alot but I am getting nervous it could be something more serious like a blood clot or something. After my leg cramps, my calf can be sore for a couple of days afterwards. I am going to my dr. tomorrow and going to talk to him about it. Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

My Childbirth class instructor said to try two tums right before bed to help avoid them at night.

I've only had one so far, so I haven't tried that.

She also said the best fix once they are happening is to stand up with your foot flat on the floor, preferrably a cold floor, like tile or wood.

ETA: They say if it is a blood clot there will be a spot on your leg that is almost hot to the touch while the rest of the area is cool.

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

I got one the other night. It hurt so bad I woke up screaming. It hurt all day the next day just I think from it being pulled. I get them once in a blue moon so I am not worried!

Drink plenty of water.

Try doing some stretching when you have the cramp.

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

I drink tons of water and eat bananas, but I get them and the pain lasts for days. The key is not point your toes at all, i.e. don't stretch. If you do stretch, make sure your feet are flat. If you feel one coming on, hurry up and grab your foot and pull it toward you so it stays flat.

I've been getting them, too, lately! I didn't know about the "banana and water" thing so I guess I'll have to try that.

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

I'm getting them more and more often.

by far the FASTEST way to get rid of them is to stand up RIGHT AWAY with your foot flat on the floor. It knocks them right out, I swear!

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

when i feel them coming on i take my foot and flex it as much as i can and it seems to stop it fast, but you have to catch it as it starts, also bananas and water!!

Re: Leg Cramps ("Charlie Horse")

I am dreading these - I have felt them "almost" but then I flex my foot/leg and they never happen... I am hoping to avoid them for the next 10 weeks and then I am golden! Chat Icon
