lol yeah okay. way to flame me because you can't read an entire post before jumping down someones throat.
She wasn't flaming you...
She just said the "theory" was rebuked.
You asked a question and based on how it was worded, these were the responses you got.
I didn't understand why you eye rolled at teddysmamma in the first place. I didn't either. It was completly uncalled for. Thanks for seeing where I was coming from!!

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
I've worked exclusively with little (EI/CPSE) kids "on the spectrum" for almost 15 years, now (yikes). No one has any real substantial insight into anything, which is really sad and scary. I've had kids w/ older Moms& Dads, but more-often, they were in their early 30s or younger. For every one who met the specifications of whatever theory, many others, did not. I have noticed a few things...the diagnosis gets children more services in early intervention, so it is given often. When I 1st started teaching, they did not give an autistic diagnosis until 5, now I've worked with 15month olds. My 1st class when I started teaching were 3-5 year olds, all classified as "children with mental retardation & autistic-like behaviors"; I left to do homecare for 7 years, returned to the classroom (bc I needed health ins), had a class the same age-group, who were cognitively, communicatively, socially, behaviorally & sensory-inegratively virtually identical to my 1st class; those children were all diagnosed PDD/ASD. Also, I have noticed that the number of children with classic autism are *not* increasing, it is the kids who are more "spectrum-y" who are. The sad truth is there is nothing you can do to predict or prevent it. If you worry about it too much, the only thing you'll do is drive yourself crazy....beleve me, I did it, my pediatritian used to yell at me at every visit. Enjoy your babies--nothing else is productive

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
Its not just the MMR I am concerned about. I havent had much time to look into it but I will. I have a couple of books I plan to read once I am done with school this semester. From what I was told Merek will be seperating the MMR Vaccine in 2011. I don't plan on doing more than 2 vaccines per visit and possible 1 depending on the vaccine and I will not be doing the Hep B vaccine at birth.

Eh, I think the caps and some of the wording i.e "ask anyone" and the quotations around "theory" (plus "for lack of a better term") was unnecessarily inflammatory... JMO, not that I really care either way, lol- but it was a sorta harsh response and I think I would have been annoyed too if I was the OP (although I prob woulda just ignored it...)
Also, it was my understanding that the OP was just saying that w/ all the controversy surrounding the MMR (regardless of the outcome/ recent news) her nephew getting the MMR just got her thinking about autism in general and prompted the post/ question she asked. It was sooo not meant to come off that way. The "theory" term was me being literal not sarcastic. I just didn't see that she had written that portion. The ask anyone on the parenting board was meant to be more informative than catty. I see where it could have been conceived as nasty but anyone who knows me on these boards will tell you that it is not my intent to cause drama especially with something as serious as Autism.

What you did was brought the MMR and autism up in the same post. What I don't think you understand is that when people do things like that some new moms to be will link them automatically. Then it stays with you no matter what. Look it up on the parenting how many people have asked about MMR and Autism because someone posted something similar to what you did. Your the one who threw in the eye roll, so I threw in a few as well.
I think the reason why she brought up the MMR vaccine was because that was the original vaccine that was "thought" to possibly cause autism.

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
OMG. Drama.
I LOVE vaccines. I get ALL of them myself. I've never slept better until after I got my H1N1: just a short while before someone at my workplace almost died after contracting it.
I'm much more afraid of my kid contracting a disease that he is not vaccinated against because more & more people are refusing vaccines. Think about it: those diseases are potentially deadly ones never seen any more by pediatricians, which could substantially delay diagnosis.
That being said, like everyone else, I'm scared of autism. I try not to drink things out of bottles/plastics to minimize that potential link. Who knows what causes it...

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
I don't believe in theories, I believe in science.
Science has proven over and over again that there is no specific cause of autism.
IMO - I hate to say this, but if you have a child, you automatically open the risk of having a child with a developmental disability. There is no avoiding it. I wish I could say there was, but there isn't. It's the chance you take as a parent!
I hope no one flames me for saying this. As an autism professional, I had that fear through my whole pregnancy, and up until he developed all of his milestones that showed me he wasn't on the spectrum.

FM pinkiegirl...she can explain more accurately how the whole autism scare was a farce.....the doctor was a sham and put the whole world into a tailspin over npothing.
MMR does not cause autism....and as far as I know there is no preventing it.....
Read it!

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
My mother is a nurse and for years she has been telling me that the vaccines do not cause autism. I have told many people this, but thankfully, research is finally coming out to agree that they don't.
I don't believe there is anything you can do to "avoid" it unfortunately. I do know that I plan on being proactive if I see or think anything.

I do not believe you can avoid autism. I believe either a child is going to have it or not. There is nothing you can do to avoid it.
agree 100%. I will not be delaying any shots/vaccines...will go by what Ped suggests and that is it.

Exactly what I was trying to say--only more concise & coherent. When I 1st started working in the field I was talking to one of the women who mentored me about the fear.... and it is frightening, but you can only choose to have a child, whether that child is "typically developing" is not a choice.

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
Wow, a lot of drama!
Here's my standpoint.......I have no idea what causes autism (and I don't think anyone else really does either), so I'm cautious about everything. Even if autism weren't an issue I would be the same way, because I feel it's better for me, my child, and the environment. These are the steps I've taken/will take to try and prevent autism (but I have no idea if it's something that can be prevented in the first place - I'm just doing what I can to put my mind at ease about it):
-eat organically as much as possible (probably 80% of all meals are organic veggies & hormone/steroid-free meats) -use only non-toxic, green household cleaners -refusing all drugs at the hospital (I'm praying I can hold out, and hoping I won't need a c-section) -using glass products as much as possible, and BPA-free when using plastics -solid wood furniture with a non-toxic finish in baby's room -spreading out/delaying some vaccines
I know there is no longer a link between vaccines & autism, but I'm still not comfortable giving my child vaccines from the day he's born (hep B). A lot of the vaccines still have traces or mercury, and a lot of them also have formaldahyde & aluminum. I'm just not comfortable injecting my very young child with those kinds of chemicals at such a young age when he's going to be BF exclusively and not be in daycare.
ETA a few more points that I just remembered

Just prayer
ITA I was thinking the same thing. Just keep an eye on development b/c early intervention is crucial.

I honestly don't think there is anything you can do to "prevent' autism. At least nothing that has been scientifically proven. I feel like it's one of those things that nobody knows why it occurs- like a gene mutation that causes Down Syndrome, etc. There isn't much you can do to prevent it IMO
ITA. I really don't think it's something you should look at as preventable. It's not like that.

Re: let's talk autism for a minute
When I was pregnant and for months after my DD was born I kept saying I was going to delay the MMR. Then came her 15 month check-up and guess what???...............she got her MMR shot. If it makes anyone feel better (and I know every baby is different) my DD had NO reaction at all to the shot and she is the EXACT same baby as she always was. I think all the speculation about the MMR got me nervous but in the end I think giving it to her was the right decision.

I totally agree and will be taking the same 'precautions', if only just to give myself a little bit of peace of mind.
