leveled readers

In my sons class they have yet to assign reading levels. At home he can read elephant and piggie books, hop on pop, and the pigeon finds a hot dog. What level readers should I look for to supplement his reading. He realty has only begun to read in the past few weeks so I want to help build his confidence.

Re: leveled readers

I would go to your elementary school's website & see if they have a link of books for his reading. My school has one on their site.

If you can't find one from your school, I found this online:

Re: leveled readers

Scholastic book wizard will give you the guided reading or lexile level of books, if you type in title of book.

Re: leveled readers

Has he read the bisquit book series? Some are pretty easy - others are more difficult. What about puppy mudge series? Also there are other mo willems books that are good at that level and also Dr. suess books. There is henry and mudge but, that is one step harder I think. I've gotten pretty good and being able to go to the library and eye books that are at my DS's level - maybe try that? I'm thinking of some other books he's read in the past...Go Dog Go, In the small small pond, in the tall tall grass... those are a few... Also, I have been getting a lot of books from the scholastic club - I got the henry and mudge starter set - those are good and a bunch of hot wheels books. He seems to be at the level 2 - my DS and sounds like maybe your DS is there as well? It's also good I find to read books a bit below them at times because it gives them confidence. HTH!

Thanks everyone so much for your feedback. I will look for the books you mentioned. Last night I pulled out some of the old leapfrog tag phonics books and had him read them without the pen. He has 4 elephant and piggy books, but after I purchased them from Scholastic I found out they are the same ones both the public and school libraries have in their collections. I am sure the others are fantastic too. I got a couple of level one and level two readers at target and he enjoyed them. I want to build up his confidence, so even though I think he could do level 2 or level 3 I would rather get him to enjoy reading first and then push him further.

I used to go to the library a lot and just look for leveled books and ask the librarian for help too!

Do they send books home to read? Usually the level is on the back (most of the time handwritten)

No. That is the problem, they have yet to start reading leveled readers in school. I have him read two different books to me every day after school. I also have him review his site word list too.
