I don't know about police, but as an NYC teacher I believe it had to do with property taxes. Lots of huge corporations are able to get exemptions so they don't pay as much tax as they otherwise would. Also, the taxes that homeowners pay are less.

I got this info from book by Jonathan Kozol called Savage Inequalities that talks about funding for urban schools vs. suburban schools.

Re: LI vs. NYC

That is often how it works--the very wealthy districts charge more money in taxes, often have taxpayers more willing to pay more to increase teachers in schools, etc., while the districts needing the most help do not get it.

That, or the magnet schools like Sty, Bronx Science, etc. Those schools get much more attention, $, etc. And most of the really rich people do go to the private schools.

Also, the NYS Lottery is supposed to provide money to the schools, which it does. NYC has roughly 37% of the kids in NYS, so it would follow that NYC would get that percent of the lotto money. However, the suburban schools get more. The Campaign for Fiscal Equity successfully sued the state to get NYC its fair share but the Governor has appealed it as he does not want to give NYC more money.

The problem is, it's not just about teacher salaries. There are so many other areas of need- we have a serious need for more counselors and social workers, for example. And our classes are way overcrowded. It's amazing to me that my school actually made gains this year.

I agree and disagree
a gun is a gun and kills the same.
My uncle who got shot as a cop in Nassau might disagree with you as well.

me too....everytime I hear that there is a shooting in queens my heart stops...One of the most active police departments in the US...and the pay scale is amoung the lowest.

Suffolk, Nassau and I believe Naples FL are the top 3....but the last time I honestly checked this was 9 yrs ago...so things could have changed since then....but the point is...Naples FL....what the hell kind of crime is there...its retired people hanging out on the beach and shopping at over priced boutiques on 5th avenue....sorry for the vent...sore spot for me.

There are many things about this issue that irk me, but at the moment the main one has to do with teacher quality. I have worked with people who are so stupid, to be brutally honest. People who can't spell, do math problems wrong, etc. I have one co-worker who is a native English speaker but is the most inarticulate person I have ever met. And she works in the classroom with CHILDREN. I've met people who have failed the LAST more than once, and almost anyone with a college education should be able to pass that test without a lot of trouble as it is a big reading comprehension test.

There are, of course, people who are excellent but it's unfortunate that in the past NYC has had to take anyone with a pulse and often they do more harm than good.

I agree but its the same out here as far as teachers. I work in a district that is one of the lowest on the Nassau pay scales. If I went to a "higher income" district, same years experience, same MA+15 I would be getting $10,000 more (at least) i know this b/c a girl I worked with was excessed from my district - she got a job n a wealthier district and makes more than me- and I have more years than her!!! Believe me, I am fortunate to have a LI job but when you look at it, its not fair either.
