Librarian Position
I am in desperate need of a new job.
I'm graduating in May from St. Johns with my Masters in Library Science.
When my student loans kick in, I really don't know how I will pay them working at my current job.
I really need a job working in a library asap, willing to work any hours.
If anyone knows or hears of anything please let me know.

Re: Librarian Position
what is your special area?
unfortunately schools are in a very bad position and I don't think things are going to get better for a few years, if at all.
Have you signed up for the suffolk public test? (Although I think it happens on even years) I don't think that Nassau has a test, but I think you have to be a resident.

Is there anyone you can connect with through your school? Advisor? Career placement? An alumni network perhaps?
Also, if you can't afford your SL's contact your lender and try going for financial hardship. You can get the monthly payment reduced or put it off completely until you have a job where you can afford it.
Of course this will add interest, but if you can't afford them, you can't afford them.

My area is in public libraries. I am considering getting a second masters down the road to become a specialty librarian - but for now just public.
I did take the civil service test back in October although I still have not received the results (6-8 months for results). I am hoping I did well.

The problem I have with the school is St. John's is based in Queens, I am a student at Oakdale without any of the resources of Queens. I have never had an advisor and although I will look into it - I am not hopeful. I didn't think of check with alumnis but I will look into that as well - my classmates are in the same position I am so they are not helpful lol

Re: Librarian Position
If you don't live in Nassau, I'm afraid you're out of luck there, although there are a few places that do not have residency requirements (I think Long Beach, Glen Cove?) When I was trying to get a full-time job, I had to first take 2 part-time positions. No benefits, but at least I was making some money and one did lead to full-time. this was many years ago, but back then, many libraries posted their p/t positions on LILRC.org Or you can try just checking different libraries' websites and/or sending your resumes to the managers of the reference/adult or children's (depending on your area of interest.) (of course include a cover letter.) Good luck!
