Lice -- could we catch it from cousin at family wedding?
DH and I went to a family wedding in CT last night (without DCs)....I was playing with DH's 8 year old cousin when his aunt pulls me aside and says, "don't get too close -- we found lice this morning." I've NEVER had lice and I don't know what to look for -- I was skeeved out last night and was spending the night at our ILs house so I actually asked my SIL if we should stop on the way home so I could get special shampoo to wash my hair with. All my ILs plus DH think I'm over-reacting, but the last thing I want is for my two LOs to get lice from Mommy ---
Any BTDT moms? Am I freaking for no reason? If DH's aunt treated the cousin yesterday morning, was the cousin lice-free at the wedding? Should I keep the boys from their playdates this week? How long do these things take to show up? I'm clueless over here.

You can definitely catch lice. They may have shampooed her hair but did they get the nits? You have to get all of those out for it to be gone. If your head gets really, really itchy then I would get a treatment and one of those lice combs to get everything out. As gross as it is you can actually see the lice in the hair if you look.
Hope you guys are in the clear!

I'm so skeeved out that EVERYTHING is itchy on me right now.
I asked our aunt if the cousin was in the clear and she said, "oh, yeah, we did the treatment this morning." So I relaxed and thought it was fine but then she told my MIL that she HAS lice (not HAD lice) and my MIL freaked out but because it was the end of the evening and MIL had sipped a few cocktails I'm hoping she heard wrong...
I might run to CVS just to be in the clear -- ecchhhh.

While lice do spread really easily, they cannot jump or anything like that. Did she have her hair up? Did you? As long as you had no head to head contact or anything like that, you should be in the clear.

I've been exposed a number of times at the elementary school I work at and have never caught lice.

We both were wearing our hair up, I didn't hug her/kiss her goodbye but we were playing cats cradle together and its possible that she could have touched her hair, touched the string we were playing with and I could have touched my hair....
I'd feel much better if I'd put my hair up, if her hair was up and I hadn't sat near her.
I'm so happy DCs didn't come with us because she LOVES the boys and would have been all over them --- we would have probably brought the lice home with us

Re: Lice -- could we catch it from cousin at family wedding?
I would bet that you are fine. If the child was treated in the A.M., anything alive would have died. The real issue would be in 7-10 days, when any eggs that may have been missed could have hatched. The chance that an egg actually transplanted from her head to yours and then "took" thus allowing it to hatch in 7 days on your head, is pretty slim (if not impossible).
Can you tell that after one experience, a few years ago with my daughter, I became paranoid

You are probably fine.
My cousin had lice years ago and spent the day climbing all over me - not knowing she had it until she went home that night.
I never got it - although my head itched like crazy for a week because I thought I had it!

Did you have hairspray in your hair? One "preventative" measure is wearing hairspray. The lice can't attach to hair that has hairspray on it. My pediatrician told me that one.
