it's already in dd's preschool class Chat Icon

Any tips on preventing it?

She was already checked by the nurse. I just bought the fairytales shampoo and conditioner. I made her change as soon as we got home and out that stuff in a bag.

But what about shoes and backpack? Any other tips?

Hair up and they like clean hair so I always make sure I use some hairspray or something like that.

I'm loving fairytales (not that I know of any cases in her school). I use the leave in conditioner spray. Works GREAT. Actually use it on my hair on extra tangle days!

AJ knows what they are (bugs) and knows not to let friends share hair clips, bows, accessories, headbands. No brushing each other's hair. Even her BFF across the street who I know is clean. Just no to all hair contact. I explained WHY. I showed her pictures and videos of the creatures.

I keep her hair pulled up and braided or not easily accessible if you will. I love her hair down but its not worth the risk. And I use the spray.

But *IF* she got them I'd treat it. I would not blame her or stigmatize it. I got them like 4 times as a kid. Never my fault. My step mother tortured me about it. Humiliated me, ridiculed me, embarrassed me and honestly I felt like less than a human. Its something I won't forget.

Hair up, spray hair. I use Suave Rosemary Mint shampoo, not sure if it helps but I hear it does so worth a shot. We also change as soon as DD gets home.

LICe don't care if your hair is clean or dirty, hairspray will not keep them away nor will blow drying, flat ironing etc

YOU cant kill lice and like mice they lay a scent and the scent attracts other lice

Prevention is using peppermint or tea tree oil in the hair everyday, lice do not like the way it smells.

Once lice are off the head they die in 24/48 hours. You can place combs, clothing in a bag and in the freezer

DD had lice 3 times last year. We even had to visit the Fairy Lice Mothers because she gave it to me one time. I learned a lot from them - they are experts.

In order to stay alive , lice need to constantly feed in your scalp. They really get a good grip on your hair strands so it is unlikely that they will fall off into a backpack or something, but if they do, within a few hours they will be weak and dehydrated and would most likely die off. even if an egg was to fall off , again unlikely, the egg would not hatch. In order to hatch, they need to be close to the scalp.

After DD got it the first time, I bought the preventative sprays, the rosemary shampoo, etc and she still went on to get it 2 more times. They did not work.

The best prevention is hair back every day and to tell her not to hug her friends. In DD's kindergarten class, the girls are always hugging and leaning all over each other. Lice cannot jump, it has to be head to head contact and they run from one head to another.

I am SOO petrified!!! My DD has super super curly hair and she wears it back every single day in school. I feel bad Bc her hair is gorgeous and looks adorable down but I will never take that chance. I also don't let her wear it back loosely. It's either in a high pony rail or braided or in a bun. Some of these girls Come to school with their hair all wild and down and I am shocked!!

yes dd has gorgeous straight hair but it's always up as well b/c it gets knotty and dirty if it's not. Today its up and braided and hairspray in. I used the fairy tales shampoo and cond last night. I know these are probably marketing schemes lol, but I'm trying to prevent it as much as I can.

I changed her as soon as she got in yesterday had a talk with her about bugs in her hair and not sharing hats etc

I see a lot of this too, free flowing hair! Won't ever see that on my DD! I put it in braids, ponytails, etc. everyday, and spray the heck out of it with hairspray with tea tree and rosemary mint.

I also think a lot of kids get it on the bus, they are shoulder to shoulder on there with big bulky coats in the winter so they crawl from one head to the other. Skeeves me!

Trader joes makes a nice shampoo and conditioner that is tea tree oil. I use it on my hair (just bc I like it. Not because of lice!) maybe something like that would work well. I wonder if putting a drop of tea tree in the scalp daily would work. I often use on my face.

our center had it last month and it remained limited to ONE case, they really did a great job preventing spread.

Everything that went into the center had to go home the same day AND everything had to be placed in cubbies INSIDE plastic bags that could tie or zip.

Each child was checked every single day in the morning.

Wash everything and talk to your girls about touching other children's hair/clothes/personal items etc.

wow that's great they contained it so well. The nurse checked everyone yesterday. Everything came home yesterday to get washed. Hopefully it doesn't spread like crazy. We did talk about it but she's 4. lol She's not really the huggy hang on you type so I'm hoping we don't get it. I drive her so the bus is also not an issue.
