LIJ New Hyde Park
I spent the day in L & D due to bleeding and I was a little nervous by what I saw. There was a lot of commotion going on and then a few people that work there told me how a lot of the rooms are 4 person rooms, and that c section patients get the 2 person rooms. I am wondering anyone who may have delivered there, what was it like? can you still have visitors with that many people in the room? I am getting concerned and at 29 weeks I really can't change hospitals Also, does anyone know how much a private room is if you offer to pay?

The new womans hospital is under construction and is due to open in march. I gave birth there last summer and shared a room with one other person. Due to the construction they might be limited to space. Your only there 2 days. You can pay for a private room

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
A private room will cost you around $575. They keep delaying the opening date for the Katz Womens Hospital there which will consists of all private postpartum rooms and unfortunately your bundle of joy will be here before the tentative date they have now. I visited a friend there 2 years ago and she had one of those 4 person rooms after her c-section and said if she had the chance to do it over she would have paid for the private room due to roommates and all having to share a bathroom. If you can afford the private room you should go for it. Good Luck

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
I was in a 2 person room last time. I had a c/s; my roommate did not. I formula fed; my roommate BF. Her husband practically slept there. Her baby screamed bloody murder from the second he was brought into the room. I kept asking for more meds, not necessarily for the physical pain, but to put me out of my misery. We had a shared bathroom w/ another room. 4 people sharing 1 bathroom. Gross.
$575 a night is ridiculous for a private room, but IMO, I'd almost be willing to skip a mortgage payment in order to have a private room.
On my last day, they let me hang out in a private room until I got discharged bc they knew my roommate was horrible. Holy cow----what a difference!!!!!!!! I could relax and enjoy the time w/ my babies!!!!!!!
That issue aside, LIJ = terrific. The staff there are wonderful and I otherwise had a great experience. Plus, H. had some isses and had to spend a few days in the NICU. (He had a private room that was 6 million times nicer than mine, lol.) He received EXCELLENT care, so for that reason alone, LIJ = worth it.

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
i delivered at lij 2 weeks ago and if i had to do it all over again i would definitely without a doubt pay for a private room. i was in a 2 person room - had a c/s - and it was still so ridiculously cramped. you can still have visitors but honestly it got annoying when my roommate had 4 people in her area - as im sure it did for her when i had visitors. there is no real privacy and sharing the bathrooms is not fun at all. it was awkward taking a shower when you come out and roommates visitors are in there. i was in a lot of pain and trying very hard to nurse... i just think it would have been easier on me if i had some privacy.

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
I was a c section mom at LIJ i delievered in 2009. I just wanted to say that i was not in a 2 person room but a 4 person room. Thank goodness there was no one else in the room with me. I delievered during the major blizzard of 2009. I guess not many people were having babies at that time so i had a 4 person room ALL TO MYSELF. but this is obviously not the norm. I wouldnt be worried thought i didnt find it cramped. and the staff there is simply amazing

ITA. I hated it. I had 3 other people in my room! Ugh. it's just so tight and cramped. I had to like walk into one girls space to go to the bathroom, and then another girls space to use the sink. It was sooo cramped and HOT!

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
This may seem like a ridiculously stupid question, but are these other ppl in the room with you while you are in labor or is this only after you deliver?
I am due in April. I seriously hope the new Womens Hosp is open by then because we def will not be paying 575 for a private room

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
i delivered at LIJ in May. i was there for 5 days in antepartum for pre-eclampsia before i had to have an emergency c-section due to HELLP syndrome, and then i was in post-partum for 4 days.
antepartum i was in a double without a roomate for 2 days and then a really awesome roomate til i delivered.
i had such a rough section that i spent the night of my c-section in the recovery room getting blood transfusions. i was still in bad shape so then i was moved to a big room in l&d until that got full. then they gave me a private room on the antepartum/post partum wing (i was in such bad shape that i didnt appreciate it at the time). the next day when they determined I was better (which i was not) they sent me to post partum and i was in a quad for about 3 hours. i was in such bad shape and i was so upset because i had a section and a preemie in the NICU - and everyone in the quad had vaginal deliveries and had their babies with them. i thought it was incredibly insensitive, not to mention i was sooo sick, could barely walk and having morphine withdrawal. so eventually they put me in a double with another lady that had a section. honestly, other than the quad the double was absolutely fine and i wouldnt pay that much more for a single. and i had a realllllllly bad section. the worst thing is that theres no showers in the room (there was in antepartum, soooo much better!!). honestly it will be sooooooo much better when the new building opens but until then i would just insist on a double, the quad was really rough, i felt like i was in the jungle, it was bad. the doubles were absolutely fine though.

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
I was in the ER a few weeks ago and a sign said the new womens hospital will open in Jan. How do you guys know of a later opening date? I'm praying it's open for my delivery as my last delivery was ridiculously crowded.

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
I delivered my at LIJ in June 2010 and I thought the entire staff was AMAZING!!! I had a great preganacy and my L&D wasnt bad at all. I did share my room with another woman, to be honest after I gave birth I was in a fog- I couldnt tell you if it was day or night. Having a roommate(s) wasnt a issue at all for me, I didnt give it any thought I just wanted my L& D to go well, which it did. BTW, I would NEVER pay for a private room.

Re: LIJ New Hyde Park
DS was just in a new PICU room and it was AWESOME! The nurse said all new rooms would be like it. There's a cool expandable couch to sleep on..I guess for dads.
I'm going to do some snooping today and find out when it will open.
