LIPA announces rate cut

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

January 30, 2007, 12:55 PM EST

Recent drops in the fuel costs have allowed the Long Island Power Authority to slightly reduce electric rates for customers, officials announced Tuesday.

"This is a step in the right direction," said Kevin Law, who was recently named chairman of the LIPA board. "Looking forward, LIPA needs to continue to do everything it can to lower the power supply charge as much as possible as soon as possible."

LIPA officials said the typical residential customer who uses 775 kilowatt hours of electricity a month will save about $3.01 a month. A commercial customer using 8,800 kilowatt hours a month could see a savings of about $34 per month.

Richard Kessel, the authority's CEO, said the rate cuts were possible because of recent drops in the costs for fuel and purchased power.

"The historic increases in the cost of oil and natural gas that forced LIPA to pass along some of those increases to customers have eased up a bit," Kessel said. "The recent reductions in those costs allow us to pass along these savings to our residential and commercial customers."

LIPA provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.

I agree...gee, now I can afford a cup of coffee once a week. I'll pat LIPA on the back when they make some real changes.
