LIPA customers warned about new billing scam
WOODBURY - Officials are warning LIPA customers this morning after a new billing scam. Hundreds of Long Islanders are reporting phony calls about their electric service. News 12 Long Island has learned the scammers are identifying themselves as LIPA employees, so initially you could think it is a standard call from the company.
The scam is widespread across Long Island and LIPA says it is trying to put a stop to it. According to the utility company, customers are getting calls from a person telling them to buy a "Green Dot Money Pak," to pay their bills. The caller says you must do this or else they will shut off your power. LIPA does not accept payments through Green Dot Money Pack or any pre-paid cards. News 12 has learned in some cases the caller also tells the customer that they may have a broken meter that is dangerous and in need of replacing, for a fee. The meter's are LIPA's property, not yours so you're not responsible.
