LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
I promise...I e-mailed them after not being able to find any info on the website. But I bet I'll get an answer here faster than from them so let me throw this out in case anyone knows....
If I have a monthly ticket for zone 4 but have to go to a location in zone 7 I have to pay a step up fare but so far it has been inconsistent and I really want to know what to pay.
The difference in price of a regular ticket is $1.25/ $1.00 difference between onboard prices.
DH gets charged $1.00 I get charged $2.25
What's the right amount...how does step up fare work when you already have some type of ticket?

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
I could never figure it out either. It seems some conductors charge the difference between a regular zone 4 and a regular zone 7 fare. Then others charge the difference between the discounted zone 4 fare (I guess assuming 40 trips off a monthly) and the regular zone 7.
I only asked how it works when I was charged more and they said it's based on the second scenario I used. I guess other ticket checkers don't care so much??

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
Now I am really curious to see what they say...I'll post it if they get back to me.
Rich questioned the conductor the one time they asked for $2.25 and told them he pays $1.00 - they told him he was lucky, shook their head and took his dollar. So that cleared up nothing but left us more confused.

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
A friend of mine routinely steps up from zone 9 to zone 10 and I think pays $2.25.

Could it have to do with whether you're taking a peak or off peak train?

Nope. They were always peak trains.

Same here for both DH and I we held peak zone 4 and were on a peak zone 7

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
Is the correct answer: they make it up as they go?

That is interesting...I wonder if there is just a set step-up fare.

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
DH is an engineer for the railroad and he says it should be 2.25. But he also says that "it depends on who you freakin' get"

Re: LIRR Question about Step-Up Fare
I don't know the answer to that question - but whatever you do, don't give them a $100 bill.
They're official policy is to take the bill - not give you change and mail you the change.
I had this problem one morning when I forgot my monthly - and it was right after my birthday so I had a $100 bill with me. The conductor hesitated, wound up letting me go and then explaining what the official LIRR policy was regarding $100 on the train.
