LIRR train plows into car; 1 killed

(02/13/09) SYOSSET - A Long Island Rail Road train struck a vehicle on Robbins Lane in Syosset Friday morning, killing the driver of the vehicle.

Police say the car was hit at around 9 a.m. and then dragged down the tracks about 1/2-3/4 of a mile. Witnesses at the scene say the railroad gate for southbound traffic on Robbins Lane opened, allowing the car to enter the intersection. It was then hit. Witnesses say the gate for northbound traffic remained down. However, the LIRR says its preliminary information shows that both gates were down at the time of the accident.

LIRR spokesman Joe Calderon says the driver of the vehicle was an elderly man. However, his identity has not been released pending family notification.

Calderon also says that repairs to the gate were performed at approximately 8 a.m. According to Calderon, crews repaird a pivot pin on the gate that had broken during high wind. He added that the pin is designed to break in high winds.

The train involved in the accident was heading eastbound to Huntington from Penn Station in New York City. Robbins Lane is closed, and LIRR service is suspended east of Hicksville on the Huntington/Port Jefferson Branch. About 150 people were on the train, but they have since been taken off.

It's terrible. I live in Syosset and know that crossing, and that exactly what it is, just a crossing, no station or anything so if that gate was broken there was NO WAY of knowing that train was coming.

Re: LIRR train plows into car; 1 killed

I pass that crossing several times a week Chat Icon Really sad.

I will say though, that I live in the area, and I am going back and forth over these grade crossing all the time! This station that the man was hit at was just west of the Syosset station. There is a grade crossing just east of the station at Syosset-Woodbury Road where the gates go down, NO train passes, and then the gates go back up, only to go down again when the train approaches! I think its timed with the train arriving into the station, but it really creates a false sense of knowing a train is coming and people will take advantage of that sooner or later Chat Icon

That is one of the worst intersections on LI. Haven't there been other fatalities in that location?
