Re: Listening to music at work...
I don't wear headphones, b/c people are always in and out of my office needing me for stuff, so I feel like if I have them on, that's the same as being "on the phone" and makes people think they are interrupting me when they're not. I use ITunes on my Mac at work and keep the sound low. And I only listen to classical music at work because it keeps me the most focused and I don't daydream, like with all other music!

depends on the job
I sit near a lot of software developers and programmers. all they do is write code. I think for them it's fine.

Re: Listening to music at work...
I wear headphones all day. I only wear one so that I can hear the phone ring or when someone comes to my cube. When I really need to concentrate I'll put both pieces in. The music is not loud, so I'm still very aware of my surroundings.
If people had the big earmuff headphones on then maybe I'd say it wasn't appropriate for the office.

Re: Listening to music at work...
I would love to since there are a million fools running all over the place and being loud at all times. But I dont think its allowed. I listen to my radio very low sometimes though.

Re: Listening to music at work...
I work in a call center and originally we werent allowed to have a radio because of what we do. But the management team said it was ok for us as long as we kept it low and something we all could enjoy. So we found a great station and really liked having the radio. If we had special visitors we would shut the radio off.
Eventually we wound up just not playing the radio anymore because we just got tired of listening to it. But their are 2 girls that work on the opposite end of the floor and they both have their music blasting. One is with a radio and the other is playing CD's on her computer. Staff has tried to be nice to them and asked them to lower the radio but out of spite they would make it louder. Very unprofessional. And it's all the cursing rap songs. Finally staff complained to management and they were told they can have a radio but as long as it's kept low and is not a distraction.
I dont think a radio is bad just as long as it's kept low. And if it's something that is being played on the floor then it's something everyone can enjoy.

I agree. DH is a programmer and he listens to his headphones all day. Most of his office does the same. I don't think it is unprofessional, so long as he gets his work done.
