Little Puppy advice needed again!

I know I posted before about leaving food and water in the crate with a puppy, but I have another question.

Bells is doing great with getting on a routine. In the AM, I let her out of her crate she does her business, eats and back in crate, lunch and PM same thing. She has not had an accident in her crate yet!

My question is, I always leave water out for her while she is out of the crate. She plays, goes over drinks a little, plays again, etc... we keep her out for hours and maybe that is the problem because, at least 2 or 3 times until she goes back in the crate, she has been having little pee accidents in the house. Now, my question is are you not supposed to leave water out for them at all and only give it to her at feeding times??

I mean if this is the case, every 1/2 hour I would have to go outside or stalk her in the house till she squats.

I would feel terrible taking it away because if she is going over to it a few times, I am not sure if it's because "Hey it's there" or she actually needs it.

Thanks

Re: Little Puppy advice needed again!

We keep water out for Lilly all the time. She's 7 and a half months old and we take her out about every 2 hours when we are home. She is crated while we are at work (from about 8:30 until 3:45). She has gotten better at holding it in since we first brought her home 2 months ago.

We don't let Lilly out of our sight when she is out of her crate. If she is unsupervised, she's more likely to have an accident. Also, if she's playing hard, when she stops, we usually take her out and she'll go then.

I think until you *really* get to know her signals and she gets a little older, she might have to remain in your sight at all times.

I laughed when you said stalk her. The truth is there is something recommended similar to this concept...called Tethering. Books, etc, suggest you leash the dog to yourself when you are home so you can always see what she is doing and catch her before she has an accident (by watching the signs, such as circling, sniffing ground, etc). So it is sort of stalking like you said.

I can see both sides, leaving water vs not leaving water. I did always leave water, b/c I don't think dogs really will drink it just b/c it is there. They really only drink it b.c they are thirsty. So I say it sounds like she is doing good holding it so far. Trust me, within 2-3 weeks her bladder will be even stronger than it is now. That is the key, consistency and bladder size (age).

I would still leave it, but that's me.

Great points. Our dog never left our sight as a pup (it was hard!). Then when we got our girl dog we were more lenient, b/c they would run and play and we didn't want to stop them. And thus, she had a LOT more accidents (and we know that was partly our fault).

They really do give signals if you watch. My girl dog runs in a quick circle when she needs to go, or scratches at the back door.

I am learning her signs so well, I love it because I think it is such a bonding between us now Chat Icon .

Thing is those quick little pee's, she has down pat and literally it happens in 2.3 seconds - LOL

We have her out of the crate from the time we get home from work till we go to bed. We have her closed off in the den with us where we watch TV and she does not leave our sight, but we do let her run freely in there, play, etc..

Good thing is, she is 3 pounds and those little quick pee accidents are like the size of a quarter, but it's still a little frustrating Chat Icon

Much of it could be excitement and her just letting it out. Girl dogs often have this problem for a while (boy dogs not so much).

Bonding...yes...so sweet.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Your best bet would be to take her outside about 15 minutes after you see her drink water and try to get her to go potty.....at the very least she will get the jist of going outside when she does have to go and may start just asking you.

Re: Little Puppy advice needed again!

when char was real little like that we limited her water in-take - her wee bladder just could not take it - and as she grew older, and got more control, we would allow her to have more and more - it was in moderation.
