Living on a busy road
We've been looking at lot of houses (probably seen at least 30-40 so far) and we found one we really like but it is on a busy road.
The house is set back off the road a bit and has a big property.. we don't have kids yet, but plan on it.
Does anyone live on a busy road? Is it something you wouldn't recommend or do again?

Re: Living on a busy road
I wouldn't buy on a busy road, it was one of my absolutely NOTS...I wouldn't want the noise and wouldn't want to have to worry about my sons.

We live not only a busy road, but a main rd. Honestly, it doesnt bother me all that much. Would I prefer a less traveled road, sure.....but having lived on a main rd for so long now, it wouldnt deter me from doing it again.

Re: Living on a busy road
We don't have kids but the family on one side raised 6 kids here and on the other side they raised 4 kids. Our road isn't overly busy but it's not the sort where you'd play basket ball in the street or let young kids ride a bike, but these days even subdivision streets outide of a cul-de-sac are not all that safe for such things either. A lot of people are opposed to a double yellow line, but lets face it, this is Long Island and there are a lot of them. It may be a small trade off if a lot of the other elements about the house are desirable.

That's good to hear, is noise/traffic not really an issue? is your yard fenced in? this yard is only fenced in the back and on the 2 sides so I would probably fence the front side of the backyard too so my dog (and future kid(s)) can run around and play freely.
so many things to think about when searching!

YEah I'm finding a lot of the houses that pop up in our price range & style of houses we're looking for seem to be on busy double yellow lined roads but I love the house.

Re: Living on a busy road
It gets loud at rush hour, but other than that it doesnt bother me. Its loud when it rains and the cars are driving by on wet roads though.
I actually live in a co-op, but they are set up townhouse style so everyone has their own front door to their unit. So I dont really have a yard, just a large "front yard" thats maybe 15 feet from the door to the road and I play out there with DS all the time. Hes only 2.5 now so I wouldnt let him alone outside yet anyway, but so far its been a non issue.
Plus like everyone says, you just get used to it after a while.

Re: Living on a busy road
I live on a somewhat busy road. I grew up in Queens and lived in NYC for awhile so it really doesn't phase me. It's not loud at all. Of course I'd love to live on a quiet street but this house had 99% of the things we were looking for so the busy road was not a deal breaker for us.

Re: Living on a busy road
we bought a house on a double yellow line road but didn't see a lot of traffic on it when we looked at it 3x. well sure enough we have tanker trucks that drive down it because of a power plant thats further down (about 20-30 trucks a day). We are extremely unhappy about it and will eventually be moving. My only advice is just check what kind of traffic will be on the street.

Re: Living on a busy road
My parents house (that I grew up in) was on a busy road. I don't see anything wrong with it. Even though it was busy... it wasn't really loud or anything. I prefer it actually. I live in the middle of a development now... very quiet streets. But, it takes forever to get anywhere. I have to do 20 mph through the whole neighborhood. My parents house was so convenient cause I could just get in the car and zoom away lol.
I don't see it being a big deal if you have kids... I grew up with 2 brothers. We were taught not to play in the street ... so we didn't.

that's a good point, I should drive by at different times of day.. hopefully the homeowners and neighbors don't think I'm a stalker

Re: Living on a busy road
I posted this same question when we were looking and the overall response was negative. I am glad I took everyone's advice. I run down the road we were considering and it gets a decent amount of traffic and people always seem to go well over the speed limit of 35. I see kids riding their bikes up and down their driveways, but they can not ride them on the road.
The noise level, however, would not be a deterent to me as our apartment used to be right by the NYS Thruway. I turned on a fan at night if it seemed to be a loud night and it got rid of the drive by noises.

Re: Living on a busy road
try parking down a side street and watching the traffic for a few minutes. (espcially rush hour!) find out how busy the road is and will you be able to make a left hand turn out of the driveway if you need to? will you be stuck in traffic just to leave your block? and as long as you guys are not bothered by the answers, go for it!

Re: Living on a busy road
We live on a busy road. It originally bothered me- but that was before we moved in. Now, it doesn't bother me in the least. Its the same type of situation that you described- house is set back from the street a little bit- and we have a huge piece of property.
The noise isn't a problem at at all. Once we close our front door, you hardly hear a thing- and we definitely do not hear lots of noise from the street when we are in our backyard.
This is our 6th year in the house- and I absolutely love our house and do not regret a single thing about it!

Re: Living on a busy road
we live on a double yellow line interior road. At first I didn't want to buy a house on this road but after realizing it was probably the only way we can afford to get in where we wanted to live I just said whatever. Its busy during school times since we are in the zone of multiple schools, we have a deli that everyone hits in the AM and after work so those are the hardcore traffic times otherwise it is not that bad. You have your idiots with the blasting stereo at times (summer will be the height of this) but we understand we probably can not have the front windows open as much due to dirt/noise but we do have them open when its the calmer hours and you hear nothing.
The positives: I can walk into town within 3-4 mins, i can get on the train within a minute (so if i go to the city i do not have to park at the station, i have a deli on my street, i have a gas station two blocks away with a grocery store - i see it as i get to do things walking that i wouldn't be able to do if living in a inner street as much.
So its up to you - i wouldn't want to live on a busy street near nothing to me that is sacrificing and having no return. Like people shuffle to live on wellwood avenue by me and that is BUSY but the houses are $$$ then most homes in the area.

Re: Living on a busy road
We had looked at a house in Baldwin Harbor and DH loved it. I hated that it was a busy road. Buying on a busy road makes it more difficult to sell later on, so that's something I'd think about too.
