I grew up in Long Island but when I got married I moved to NYC where my husband is from. I’m not sure if I want to move back to Long Island or make a new change to New Jersey. I definitely want to leave living in NYC but we will both continue to work here. I’m looking for a desirable community with excellent schools and low crime, involved sports teams, close to the beach and within a 5 minute drive to a major road/highway. Anyone have any recommendations of the town they love in Nassau or the border of Nassau/Suffolk. Thank you.

Rockville center fits the bill for all of that.

Northern Nassau has great schools. So think anything in these school districts: Roslyn, NHP-GCP, Herricks, East Williston, Garden City. Also, keep in mind. Good schools, great neighborhood equal high prices on houses and taxes. I live in a great district and lucked out on our house but I would never be able to afford these new prices.

I will say that I don't intend to stay in the Northeast, however if I was going to, I'd chose NJ over LI every single time. For the mere fact that it's so much easier to travel from NJ than from LI. No matter what time of day it's a nightmare getting into and out of NYC to leave LI. Once we get into Jersey it's like a different planet. And the roads are nicer too. And everything just seems cleaner and better. I'm done with Long Island and NY in general.... it really has become a major shit hole. From what I see with friends who live in NJ and coworkers, if you are going to pick one, I'd look into NJ. I can't point you in the direction of towns that fit your needs but I know many on here live in NJ and can probably help you

Personally I hate NJ. I lived there for 9 years so I do have first hand experience, I am not basing it on anything other than my own personal experience. I would take LI any day over NJ. That being said, I can't wait to move out of the north east. If I were able to move right now it would be to South Carolina or Florida. My ultimate goal is to buy in Bermuda but that is a difficult process and more just a pipe dream.

I think it depends more on the neighborhood than whether you’re in NJ or on LI. You have to go through Penn either way if you commute by train and both NJ transit and LIRR are a hot mess.
Since you have kids, I’d move to wherever the more helpful grandparents live.

Merrick/Bellmore is near the beach, 45 minute train ride to Penn, and great schools. It's south shore, but you are 5 minutes from the Meadowbrook, Wantagh, and 135 (seaford oysterbay) parkways. I grew up near the NJ border and now live on LI. I guess depends on what you want. Being near helpful family when you have kids is important.

This is where I lived when we were on LI. It wasn’t perfect and I hated the commute on the LIRR but I never appreciated the level of convenience in terms of highways, stores, restaurants, kids activities, etc until I left.

My sister lives in Wantagh and her husband walks to the train. They live in the Wantagh Woods section and she likes it because they can walk to some restaurants with the kids.
After visiting LI last weekend, you couldn’t pay me to live there.

Re: Location
Don’t come here. It’s horrible. No really. No matter what time of day, there’s traffic. All the time. You can never leave early enough or late enough to “beat it” Every morning when I drive to work, I have a knot in my stomach from the brake lights. No matter which way you go, screwed. I’m constantly talk to text my employees to say “I’ll be there soon” as they wait for me to open up. I live 11 miles away from our business and it sometimes takes me 45 minutes. I HATE IT
I know a few people who are happy in Northern NJ and commute to city isn’t bad. I don’t know about their daily general traffic but I know here, it’s horrible.

It has gotten 100 times worse in the past 10 to 15 years. And the reason is they are overbuilding. And it's no longer houses. It's apartment buildings. Packing 100s of people (and cars) into a space where maybe only a few single family homes would fit. If you notice, that's all that is being built everywhere now. Is there that much demand to live here? And pay rent? Either way the infrastructure can't support it In NYC they have mass transit. You can't turn long island into NYC without a subway system and expect the roads to be able to handle it. It's only getting worse. Soon it will take an hour to go 5 miles.

I agree with you.
I was never a fan of LI but was hesitant to come to NJ from Queens. I am happy, I did. I prefer NJ 10000% more than LI. As of the last few years, I actually prefer it to NYC. And I thought I would never say that. If it wasn't for work and my family, Idk if I would ever really visit NYC.
I will say commuting into NYC has always been so much easier since I moved to NJ then when I was commuting from Queens. I can't even imagine doing that sh!t from LI. I also prefer the beaches.

I am in Northern NJ and the traffic isn't bad. Usually we tend to stick in this area. You also know when to avoid traffic (ex. Summer when people are driving to the shore). It's not like traffic all day. I noticed that my tolerance for traffic is so much lower than when I lived in NYC. I find myself complaining because I sat in 5-10 min of traffic in my area and it's usually for something minor.

I would too, just not to NJ. I’d move out of the Tri state are completely. Actually I’d move out of the whole northeast.

Same. I would move away from the entire tri state area. Nothing appealing about any of it

I remember you saying you needed to be able to get to Staten Island easily. I think that would be easier from NJ...

Agreed. I would like to move to SC but I feel stuck here because I have a son w/ special needs, and I'm hearing the services stink in the warmer & lower cost of living states.

Yeah we are stuck here because my kids would flip out if we moved. My son is starting high school this year, my middle is starting middle school and my youngest will be in 5th. I figure once she goes to college we will spend a good chunk of the year off long island.... As it is we travel a ton right now so it's not that big of a deal just staying put until they graduate HS.
