I think something huge might be overwhelming for a 1 yr old. Our DD is 10 months, and in May, we're just going to have something small, with about 20 people, mostly family. We did something similar for DS 3 years ago. For later birthdays, when they can actually enjoy the activities, you can do the big events, but the 1st b-day is really for the parents, so IMO, I'd keep it on the smaller side.
