I'm not sure, my guess would be b/c convention dictates that girls wear long hair and boys keep their hair short. Sort of like their hair defines who they are gender-wise.
I agree. It's the societal norm for boys/men to have short hair so many people feel the need to comment when it's not the case.
DH has long hair and it's never bothered me
ETA - my SS is 12 and DH recently made him cut his long hair. He was not keeping it up well at all.
Sounds like your DH did exactly what I would have done. BTW, in every picture I have ever seen of your DH, his hair looks amazing!

I dunno. I'm kind of a fan of long hair on men!
ETA - I don't think DH looks feminine, ratty, disgusting, or anything else that so far people have posted about men with long hair.
And I like his facial hair too....

Re: Long hair on boys
my baby is only 5 months old, I can't see cutting his hair...but when we go out I hate to see it on his face, so I put it up. I don't think he will be going to kindergarden like this, but it works for now.
Actually, I would love for him to go to school with a Joey Lawrence, Gimme a Break do!

Re: Long hair on boys
when they are mistaken for girls then the hair is too long
however for the most part it looks ok if they in masculine clothes (not the girlie shirt celine put her kid in that has cuff sleeves!!!)
you would never want your kid being called a girl when hes a boy

Re: Long hair on boys
I kind of like long hair on boys or girls. Especially when they have really nice hair. I think that when they got old enough, if they didn't like it they would ask to cut it.

LOVE this - I'm already taking the little hair Cailen has and spiking it up with water - LOVE his little "faux hawk!"

I dont think that long hair on little boys is cute at all. Never have, never will.
As children get old enough to express themselves and have preferences to long or short hair, to each their own. If I am to have a son someday, and he is old enough to choose having long hair, then he will have to maintain it to a level at which I can accept. That means washing it and brushing it every day or out come the clippers. I teach 10-13 year old boys and THEY DO NOT BATHE every day. I never thought I would sound this conservative, but, sometimes a child's appearance is a direct reflection of the parent. I will not allow my child to walk around with dirty matted or stringy hair. I can't stand how it looks.
There are plenty of pre-teen and teenage boys who have long hair and look like boys. I have no issue with that - but not little ones.
I agree 100%!

Re: Long hair on boys
TO answer the question - is definitely a cultural thing. In our culture it is "norm" for women to have long hair and men to have short hair. Think about the commotion when a woman shaves her head (i.e. Britney Spears). In other cultures, it is reversed - the woman have short hair and men have long hair.
In my personal opinion, I don't really care one way or another. I happen to like longer hair on men, as I stated in Liza's post. And on little boys, I have no problem with it either. And I think its a huge generalization to say long hair on men is nasty because its stringy and dirty.. I mean there are women out there with the same issues, its a personal hygiene issue, not a long hair on men issue.

Thanks DH keeps his hair up very well. He is at the salon more than me
SS had braids not dread locks and they were not maintained well at all. DH basically told him that if he could not keep it looking neat then he could not have it at all.
SS wanted dread locks but they are a huge committment. At 12 I don't think I could handle that.
I have seen 3 - 6 year olds with dread locks but the parents are keeping up with them not the kids.

Katrina -
You know how I feel about your DH - he is a hottie!!!
DH has more hair products than I do - and he uses up all my stuff to keep up his beautiful hair! Its so funny what he does to his hair in the morning, while I wash and go - maybe running a brush thru it!
