Long live Fudgie the Whale - The first Carvel, based in Hartsdale, has closed after more than 70 years.

It’s not really a Long Island story, though thousands of area residents did grow up on soft serve ice cream from New York’s Carvel.

The first Carvel, based in Hartsdale, has closed after more than 70 years.

Customers flocked to the 1950s-style store in Hartsdale, about 25 miles north of Manhattan, snapping photos and lamenting the coming shutdown, owner Abdol Faghihi said.

“I’m extremely saddened,” said Faghihi, who bought the franchise more than 20 years ago. “For everyone who comes in, it was special.”

The Carvel company started after Tom Carvel’s vending truck suffered a flat tire in Hartsdale during Memorial Day weekend. Stuck, he began selling his melting ice cream from his broken-down truck. Business was so brisk in the neighborhood that he decided to open his first store two years later.

Tom Carvel, who died in 1990, is still remembered for starring in his own commercials, pitching cakes such as Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss.

Fudgie the Whale turned 30 in 2006.

It was too expensive to maintain. It was a pretty big store, bigger than most of the newer ones you see in strip malls. The owner also said that they started losing business when Carvel products became available in stores.

I considered going for one last ice cream cone, but I forgot. DH did drive by on the way to the supermarket on Sunday & saw them sweeping up.

The owner sold it & there is going to be Japanese Hibachi restaurant there.

Sad. The Carvel in the neighborhood I grew up in just closed too.
