Long-Need some help-Question about switching formula-baby is sick now...RATHER LONG

I'm sorry but I hardly ever get on here anymore between work and home, I am just exhausted... Today I really need some help...

I was nursing in the beginning for three months and Kris was really colic and sick. Dr. told me to stay away from dairy and see how it went. By three months, was ready to shoot myself so I put him on soy and that was that. He was still cranky and extremely constipated but a totally different baby as compared to when I was nursing. He was still gassy and very constipated, but so much better.

I held off on giving him cereal and at 5 months, we started fruits. I took him to get allergy tested and turns out that he was not allergic to milk, but to wheat. So I started him on rice cereal last week and on Saturday night, I changed his formula to milk based. However, in the am, I had given him prunes bc he had not gone in 4 days. By Sunday am, he had gone an amount that I could not figure out where he stored it in his little body. He is still going 4 days later. It's not totally watery, just weird, lose and green. No mucus or anything. It looks different from what he has ever gone before, but he has never really gone normal and always strains except when he had a virus and that was not like this... It looks like it did when he was a newborn. Then again, it's usually so hard that anything different would just not look normal.

So I called the dr.'s office and tehy said that they thought it could be teh prunes considering he hadn't gone in so long and he eats a full jar in one sitting and teh fact that he tested negative for an allergy... Today, it's no better.

On a whole, Kris has been the happiest he has ever been. He is usually gassy and spits up, for once he isn't kicking his legs or spitting up on me. He has slept 6-8 hours in a row since Saturday, more than he has slept straight since November... He is wonderful, I can't even explain how much better he has been acting and all would be great if he ever stopped pooping!

Has anyone ever experienced this? I feel so bad for him and am worried, I called the dr and I am waiting for a call back. He is eating normally and this is the only issue I have right now. But as far as his behavior, he is so happy that I think I did teh best thing for switching him to milk based!

I really need some reassurance that he is goign to be ok...and I hope the dr calls me back soon. I called half an hour ago and I need to go home.

i hope he feels better soon! maybe he is still adjusting to the new cereal/milk etc... if he's going frequently you may need to get him some pedialyte. good luck!

We actually just went through this. Ds's poop got weird when we switched back to milk based formula. The dr explained that when you switch the baby to soy its body stops producing the enzyme to digest dairy. When you switch back to milk based formula it takes a week to ten days for the body to make enough of the enzyme to digest it correctly. That might be the reason.

That makes so much sense! I appreciate your responses... my dr called me back and said is positive it is the formula and most kids have soft stool-and he may go regularly like that. Green and weird!

I feel so much better!

It took two weeks but now we are back to one poop a day or every other day. It will get better.

Thanks again! i really hope so. He just woke up at 3 covered in crap, head to toe-I feel so bad for him... But what you said makes total sense and I will wait out the two full weeks. I am going to ask to have him tested again though on the 7th when I go t for the follow... just to be sure!
