Long Shot...Anyone have "rectangle/square" windows? Updated with Pic
We have a window that is currently 46 inches wide and 37 inches tall. It is a slider.
We want to replace it - but we want double hung (or DH wants double hung).
Our two options for this opening (unless we cut and custom make the window which we don't want to do) is to either do
Two side by side double hung windows that will each be 20+inches wide and 37 inches tall.
OR
One double hung window that will be approx. 46 inches wide, 37 inches tall.
Most of our neighbors have sliders or awning windows. One neighbor has the second option and it looks...a little weird.
My mom told me that she has the second option -- and to be honest, I've never realized it so how weird would it be?
The firefighter's wife and daughter in me is freaking out about trying to squeeze my butt out of a window 20 inches wide - even though both top and bottom pop out.
Any advice?

Re: Long Shot...Anyone have "rectangle/square" windows?
You know the windows in my house but the our master bedroom window (by the bathroom) is 50.5 x 38! I have hung out the window before, while cleaning... Now since that is the crank out window, it is different.
The kitchen window (slider) is 51.5 x 35! I have never tried to get out of it!!!!
If it was me, I would go with the bigger window that is double hung rather then the 2 smaller...Then you could do a nice big window treatment rather then trying to do individual..

Thanks, I just sent you this pic but was going to update the post. This is my neighbor's house -- which is like mine. They opted for the one double hung. Do you think it looks weird? Anyone else? Image Attachment(s):

Are you referring to the top two windows? I am not sure which one you are referring to.

Re: Long Shot...Anyone have "rectangle/square" windows? Updated with Pic
I have windows with very similar dimensions- sliders too (46 by 34) There is a house similar to mine where they put in the double hung and I think they look nice. Sliders are a pain.
ETA: I never did think about getting out of those windows during a fire though. Eek! Nearly everyone else where I live just replaced the original sliders with new sliders.

The sliders have been a bit of a pain for us -- but at least you have the whole half to get out. That's enough.
My fear with two small tiny 20 inch double hungs is that it'll reduce the amount of available space to get out.
DH says I'm irrational at this point.

We had a similar problem, and we just made the windows bigger when we replaced them (our contractor did it relatively easily). We had sliders and replaced with casements.
I would get the one big window.

Speaking strictly for a code perspective, you need to have at least one egree window in each bedrooms. I don't believe you would be allowed to do the 20" wide windows. They don't meet code for egress.
