Looking for advice-hospital related
I am having a scheduled C section at Winthrop at the end of the month. When I called about a tour (I've never been there) they said they don't do tours for c-section patients (which I really don't understand) but I could go look at a slide show & meet a dr. to answer questions. Well I was sick and had to miss it. I want to visit the hospital before I give birth and they only offer this thing once a month. I can't make it this month. Should DH & I just go there & ask the nurses questions? I've called but haven't been able to get someone on the phone. TIA for any advice.

Re: Looking for advice-hospital related
i am not sure how the tours work at winthrop, but at my hospital (st. luke's roosevelt) it is a group tour. could you possibly sign up for a group tour and they would maybe not know you are a c-section patient? that sounds extremely unfair to me, by the way

that's not fair at all. I would try and go anyway, don't tell them you are having a C

That's what I was going to say. I understand if they don't feel the need to show you the L & D rooms but it would still be nice to see everything else. Don't even tell them and just go like you're having a natural delivery.

I had a tour at a different hospital but I didn't have to fill anything out. I would try it...there's no reason you shouldn't be allowed to go.

Re: Looking for advice-hospital related
You did not miss much. I did the tour and ended up with a scheduled c-section at the end.
They show you NOTHING!!!! Just one L&D room which you will not go in anyway.
When you arrive at the Birth Center, there are the double doors.
After you enter the double doors the nurse counter is in the left. The triage rooms are on the right.
When I had the tour, they showed us the "hallway" of the triage room, the hallway of the OR for the c-sections, the hallway to the nursery/NICU and we saw one L&D room.
We did get a bag for our efforts.
I got more info from the orientation presentation.
ETA: don't tell them you have a scheduled c-section if you really want to have the tour.
For the c-section, I went to the triage room. They will do the vitals, the IV, etc.... I walked to the OR with DH.

Re: Looking for advice-hospital related
I did the tour at Winthrop as part of the lamaze class - it was less than an hour long. They spend a good portion of the time on the 2nd floor during visiting hours where you can see where the babies are behind the window and in another seciton where the baby gets warmed and bathed. We just stood there staring for a good portion. Then, they brought us to the 1st floor new life center, where they do show you a Triage room where they take your vitals. Then off to Labor room - they point at the OR -where they perform emergency Csections, but they said most scheduled c sections are in a different part of the hospital.
I think you might have trouble just going and askng nurses quesitons on the delivery floor b/c you need to be escorted to get inside the actual unit, but it might be OK on the recovery floor during visiting hours.

That tour is with the lamaze/childbirth classes. If you don't do the class, they do the tour on Mondays only like I described above.
Unless they changed the "rules". The scheduled c-sections are done in the OR. That's were mine was last year.

With DD#1 I never took a tour and did not feel like I missed anything. What is there to really see?

Probably not much. I have just never been to that hospital at all so I want to be sure I know where to go if I go into labor earlier than my c-s date.

I had to go in and fill out paperwork prior to giving birth and saw where I need to go when I was in labor. This time I am having a scheduled c/s and I have to go ahead of time for pre- surgical testing. Maybe you could see it then?

Thank you, that is a good idea. I do have to do the testing as well. I guess I'm just nervous that this baby is going to want to come out earlier. I am schduled to do the testing only a few days before the c-s. I am sure I'm just being paranoid. Maybe we'll just take a drive there to just see where the place is, I've never even see the hospital . Then hopefully like you said I can see more during the testing.

Re: Looking for advice-hospital related
I would definitly go down there and see if they can give you just a quickie tour or something. Or at least ask if you can walk around just to explore on your own.
