baybridge is very nice- but there is nothing in the complex under $500K- and that's for the 1 bedroom on the ground floor

Unfortunately you can probably only get a studio for that amount! There are a lot of nice places to live in Forest Hills, Queens. It's about a 20 minute ride into the city or like an 11 minute LIRR ride.

Re: looking for affordable townhouse in nyc
NJ has TONS of these type of townhouse/condo properties.
Check out Edgewater, Hoboken, Jersey City.
In Jersey City- the downtown area is very nice and they are in the process of building many condos and town homes- a lot of the builders/developers are offering deals b/c the market has softened but they are still building a lot... so they have to get rid of inventory. It's worth looking into.
Another nice community in Jersey City is Port Liberte- it has it's own ferry service into NYC and it has a canal setup and a view of liberty state park and the new multi-million dollar golf course that is going up there. I have 2 friends that live in that community (it's gated) and they love it.
Another more inexpensive community in Jersey City is Society Hill- but this isn't downtown JC- it's more central and I don't think you can take train/ferry you have to take the bus (and i HATE the bus b/c I hate going into PA- but if you don't mind that, then go for it).
I lived in Jersey City for 3 1/2 years and i have to say my commute into the city was excellent- only 20 minutes and a $1.50 each way- can't beat it. The ferry is a little more expensive t approx $5 each way.
