looking for some good advice..

here's my situation.. and it IS parenting related as my decision is based on my children...
i want to further my education and become a nurse practitioner. i registered for A class on monday and Wednesday nights.. it goes from 6 to 10 30 at night.. right at homework, dinner and bedtime... i have 2 in school full day next year... the thing is i work the other 3 days at the hospital and i miss it all those days too.. MY DH DOES NOT COOK so i would have to prepare meals ahead of time.. and i would miss out on seeing the kids... sports... stuff like that that happens after school.. m y Dh thinks its a short term sacrifice, but i'm having a hard time with it.. Next year i will be going part time and will have more time, but the program is going to take me three years to complete.. should i go for the class or wait till next year???

It is a short term commitment, but is it all year? 6 months?

If it were me, i would take it when I'm part time. I couldn't sacrifice bedtime & dinnertime 5 nights a week.

Re: looking for some good advice..

But are you really going to take it next year? My initial reaction was to say take it now, and I agree with your DH that it is part-time. But now realizing that you work the other 3 nights, it will be really difficult.

Sorry I'm not much help. Would it help to think that at least you will have 2 full days with them, when you are not working and taking the class?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also you are TTC, no?

I know there are ladies on this board that can attest to how hard it is to study while pregnant. Not impossible but harder.

Maybe now is the time to do it then, since you are not preggo yet. Then, when you are preggo you can take the online classes.

No you're giving them a mom with more employment opportunities & the idea that you are bettering yourself is one you would want to plant in their minds.

Plus it's cool when you're in school & your mom is too. I was in college & my grandmother was going to Stony Brook.

Re: looking for some good advice..

If you are serious about the NP, I would not postponne. How will it be easier when you are PG or with an infant? It won't.

Yes, it's a sacrifice. I just don't think pushing it out will be easier.

ETA: I finished my last semester when I was in my 1st trimester. I was glad it was my last and that I did not postponne to another semester. It was too demanding/exhausting and now with an infant... no way!

I agree...I would take the class now and sacrifice the time now. You have to do what's going to be best for your family - 3 or 4 months of being home in the evening vs. being an NP with their salary.

However, I know this is such a hard decision to make!

Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

it's going to SUCKKKKKK.. but its one year, and then it will be out of the way!! and, it's not even a whole year.. its 2 semesters that will fly by.

A year is going to pass by either way- you can either set yourself up for something really great, or have this same debate with yourself again next year.

I can only imgien how hard it is--- i don't have kids, i only work PT and, still, i'm SOOO ready to be done. But, i would have seriously regretted not doing it.

just divein- it will be over before you know it! Chat Icon

I say go for it. That is a great job. You will love it. Soo many job opportunities. It will be a sacrifice, but well worth it! Good Luck!
