Re: looking to rent in queens...
Try craigslist many owners will rent by owner without going through a RE since you can post for free.

Definitely try craigslist. I was just looking yesterday at apts in douglaston and bayside for a friend. You can usually find without a broker fee there.

Re: looking to rent in queens...
I tried to do it on my own- but it's hard in bayside- there are not a ton of rental buildings and the market it competitive
I had to use a broker- and the fee was 1.5 months rent
but I got a great apartment- but it's in a co-op building not a rental building

Re: looking to rent in queens...
In Forest Hills you could always take down the phone numbers for the building management companies and call them directly. The numbers are usually posted at the entrance of the building.

if you call them directly - is there a fee?

Re: looking to rent in queens...
i can't speak for all buildings in the area. but in mine the manager would probably just put you in touch with super who would show you around. in the really big buildings, like Parker Towes on Queens Blvd, there is a management office who can probably tell you over the phone what is available, how much $, and when someone from their office can show it to you.
eta: i don't think they charge for this
