LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
I'd like to go to the Outer Banks at the end of August. DS will be 9 months old. It's about a 9 hour drive....like a full work day. Do you think that's too long for him? I hate to have him in the car seat for so long. That's no way to spend your day. We could break it into 2 days if necessary, but I'd rather not. If you think it's ok to take the drive...what suggestions do you have to make it enjoyable? Thanks.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
we did 6 hours with Em at 6 months & she was FINE. every time we took a break (rest-stop, etc.) - we took her out of the carseat and we tried to spend at least 15-20 minutes out of the car....
she did really, really well, in fact better than she does now at 8 months for a 20 minute ride!

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
i'll take a 9 hr road trip anyday over a 9hr plane ride with security.
i'd suggest driving when it's close to DC's bedtime. Then you could drive straight while your DC is sleeping.
Or you could split the day and drive 4-5 hour stretches with a nice break in the middle.
It's totally doable.

Could you do it while DC is asleep? We just went to Maryland this weekend and we did the drive there right at DS's bedtime so he slept the whole way and then we just transfered him when we got to the hotel.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
We are drinving to Florida in April with a then 3 year old and a 6 month old. We are leaving at around 9pm so they will be sleeping most of the time. (I hope anyway). Is there anyway you can do that? leave at night? It would be easier and then you can start a new day where you want to be

We did 5-6 hours to VT when DS was about 5 months. He was awesome. I sat in the back seat to entertain and feed him. We took him out of the car seat at rest stops so he could "stretch". He did just as well on the drive home.
Just make sure you stop enough for diaper changes and time out of the seat.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
We've done a similar length trip lots of time to visit DH's family. My advice is try to drive at night at least one of the directions. We leave around 4-5pm, stop for dinner around 7-8pm and then DS sleeps the rest of the way. For the way back, start very early and try to plan a fun place to stop to break up the day a bit.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
We are driving to Florida next month. Aidan will be 4 1/2 months old. Our friends did it when their kids were 2 months old and almost 3 years old. We are going to use his big car seat so he isn't jammed into the infant seat. We are going to make frequent stops and do 2 overnights to get down there instead of the usual 1 night...

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
We drove to Myrtle Beach when DD was 10 months old and it was about 12 hours or so. she did perfectly :)
We do have a DVD player in the back of our SUV so that was a huge help. I'd reccommend one of the portable ones.
We took a bunch of stops to get her out of the carseat and walk around and eat.
She also napped fine in the carseat as well. I packed lots of toys and books and it really helped too.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
10hr was my max for my trip to TX
AJ was 9mo old. I was at that point still feeding her every 3ish hours, so I planned stopping areas every three-ish hours on my trip to get down, walk around get her out of her car seat, feed her, change her and refresh. That took about a half hour at tops. Then back in the car. What was great is if she slept I'd get about 4-5hrs in.
Still it sounds a lot worse than it was and it was nice for me to get up and de-stress too.

Re: LOOONG Road Trip with 9 Month Old
Thats not too bad. DH's sister lives in VA and we went when DS was 9 months. We didn't have a problem. But we drove at night so he'd sleep the whole way.
