Road Trip with a 2 year old and a dog -- experts please come in!!
I will be driving to Burlington, VT with my almost-3-year-old rambunctious Lab, and a very tantrumy 2 year old who no longer naps in the car.
I have a tray that straps on to her car seat - foam with edges. I have crayons, coloring books, new toys, aquadoodles, CDs, and a DVD player. Snacks and drinks as well.
For the pup I have treats, stinky feet, a rawhide (which he never gets normally) and a few chew toys.
I'm keeping a box on the front seat next to me with all these supplies to be handed out as needed.
It's normally a 7 hour drive. I got TripTix from AAA so I will know every single stopping area along the way. I figure I'll have to stop every 2 hours or so.
Any BTDTers who can suggest anything I may have forgotten?? I am a bit apprehensive about this!!
TIA.

I drove with my dog from FL to NY and back, some things that help were: Bottle water and and disposable bowls (to put his water and able to throw the bowl after the stop), also plastic bags (for when he did #2) and antibacterial for my hands. his favorite snack during the trip was a dehidrated ribs, it was great because it took him a long time to eat them. I'll take the Thanks -- and what are dehydrated ribs? I don't think I've ever seen them...(I do have all the other stuff you mentioned, thanks.)

I haven't traveled with a dog, but, have traveled to FL with Bry. Sounds like you are set. My biggest piece of advice is: Stop A LOT! Let your little one, run around the rest areas. We did this and tried to tire Bry out (he cat napped), but, he loved to be able to stretch his legs (and we used these opportunities for diaper changes as well). The DVDs were a lifesaver for us also.
Have a great trip and Good Luck!

I dont know if that is the correct name but is similar to this and I get it at the supermarket or at petsmart in the snack aisle on the bottom

I haven't done a roadtrip with Jack but I would suggest putting on Overnight diapers - just in case you don't get to stop as often as you would like - or if Ale happens to fall asleep for a nice amount of time (fingers crossed)
I put overnights on him for all of our plane rides!

I agree with the water & bowls & bags for the dog! We travel with our lab long distance all the time, he loves the car and sleeps most of the trip. The one thing I have is a seatbelt harness for him.....its a soft harness that you thread the seatbelt thru, safer for him and the rest of us god forbid there was an accident. I can't find a pic of our exact one, but this is similar

I have a DVD player yes. And she has never used overnight diapers -- I plan to stop every few hours anyway so that won't be a problem....

Have you considered a sedative for the dog? I know that may sound mean to some people, but it may make it easier if at least the DOG takes a nap
As for your DC, sounds like you are all set there!

Kara- we left Tally in the car for about 10 minutes while we went inside the rest area to use the barthroom. While were in there, she jumped across the back seat into the front and snapped the wires to our DVD player and broke it. I don't know what kind of DVD player you have but just wanted to give you a heads up in case yours has those wires like our do...Good luck and have fun!!

Re: Road Trip with a 2 year old and a dog -- experts please come in!!
We just went to NC with a 15 month old and my 7 year old golden. My dd was fine. We traveled through the night so she slept, the dog on the other hand panted the entire 14 hours! My dog goes in the car for 1 hour trips all the time and is perfect so we never would have thought she would have had such a hard time. My suggestion is to pack some benedryl or some sort of dog tranquilizer just in case. We had to stop in a bad part of D.C. to get benedryl which took a little of the edge off. On the way back we gave her a tranquilzer which helped her a little. I am normally against giving these types of things to my dog, but we felt she was going to have a heart attack if we didn't calm her down!
Lots of Luck! We usually make it up to Burlington in 5 1/2 hours when there is no traffic. Hopefully you will be traffic free!!

We've done lots of travel I can add- a cooler and tons of snacks. I recommend freezing water bottles and freezing juice boxes. Also you can buy those crystal lites to go and add them into the water bottles. bring LOTS of DVD's ...that saves our trips.

We drive upstate alot (4hr ride) and normally have all the snacks/drinks handy along with papertowels & wipes. DVDs are a must for us and I always put on overnight pampers on DS. BTW my 5lb dog does not move at all in the car so I barely remember she is with us If you havent done this trip at all, I would limit the amt of snacks you give to your dog - just in case she is nervous or if the car ride/snacks make her sick

Thanks everyone -- both DD and Scout have made this trip many times before. They are both fine in the car.
It's just that this is the first time I will be taking them by myself so I won't be able to attend to DD's every whimper.
Oh well, she'll just have to get over it!

Re: Road Trip with a 2 year old and a dog -- experts please come in!!
I learned that if you put O's in the cup holder on the side of the car seat the dog will eat them too. So we got the snack trap cups. Works much better.
My mom keeps an empty tang/kool-aid container of water and another one of food for the dog when she travels - the top/lid is a good little size bowl for the dogs.
Someone posted 20 top parenting tips today - one was cookie/sheet pan and magnets to entertain DC. I'm doing that next week on my road trip.
I'm planning my trip around DS's schedule. He eats lunch at 12:00 at school. Last time we took the trip he started to flip out around 3 hours. I'm meeting my sister about 1 hour from her house (3 hours from my house) at 12:00 for lunch. There is a zoo or crayola factory depending on weather. Then leave at 4 - drive the other hour and hopefully he'll be worn out and sleep. On the way home, I'm leaving her house after lunch - b/c after lunch is nap time at school - so I'm hoping he'll crash in the car for most of the trip.
