Lost my job - update at bottom

I was laid off due to restructuring today. I can't really talk about it yet, because not everyone knows about the changes. DH is away on business and all I want is a shoulder to cry on.

I'm devastated. I've been with my company for 14 years. I've consistently received great reviews and had high performance.

I just needed to vent. So consider this my pity party Chat Icon

This. And not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, but did you have any idea it was coming? I hate hearing stories like this.

Many people who work with the population of people I do are concerned of the same thing because they are restructuring the program on the state level, it sucks because pretty soon there are going to be a whole lot of disabled homeless people walking around with no more services and supports. I know it's not the same thing but I frequently think the people who "restructure" programs have no freakin' clue the amount of harm they cause.

Our industry has been shrinking so it's not a total surprise. But it seems my experience counted against me as they kept on the lower paid employees.

Can someone explain how unemployment works? My last day isn't until May 16 and I'm receiving severance. I don't want to make a mistake and file too early and owe money back.

I am so sorry about the loss of your job. You can't file now since you are currently employed. On your last day when you come home, file for unemployment. Best of luck to you!

Re: Lost my job

Ugh unfortunately I'm not surprised. I'm seeing more middle management positions are going away in most fields.

Also people who are about a generation older than me are having a harder time (40s and 50s).

What are you looking for? Maybe if we hear of anything we can send you the info.....

You file for unemployment on your first day you are unemployed - so May 17. There's a waiting period and then you will begin to receive your benefits. You must file weekly to continue to receive them, and you must be actively looking for a job to continue to receive them.

You will definitely find something else. It's tough at first, but you will find something even better!

I'm in the educational sales industry, so really anything in that area would appeal to me. I've been in marketing and sales for 12 years.

I already have two leads at my company on other roles, so hoping one of those pans out. We'll see.

The worst part is my current direct report is taking over my territory, so now I have to train her all on of it. It's really just awkward for both of us. I hired her and have been her supervisor for 2 years and now she is replacing me.

Lost my job

I recently lost my job too due to " reduction of workforce". Apply for unemployment.. But if you receive severance there will be a delay in payments. Depending on what you get they will say you are not eligible until a certain date.
