Lost woman killed in fatal hit-run; DWI suspected
BY: ANDREW STRICKLER
January 25, 2009

A Valley Stream woman who was lost and on a cell phone with her boyfriend trying to find the Long Island Expressway died yesterday after her car was struck by an accused drunken driver who then left the scene, police said.

Melissa Scherr, 25, died just after noon at Huntington Hospital from injuries sustained in the early morning collision in Melville, said police, who credit a firefighter responding to the crash with help in the arrest of Douglas Davis, 44.

Davis, who is being held at the Second Precinct in Huntington, is accused of drunken driving and fleeing an accident. The Suffolk County district attorney's office will likely upgrade the charges now that Scherr has died, police said.

Davis, of Centerport, is to be arraigned today in First District Court in Central Islip.

Scherr was lost and getting directions from her boyfriend, Vito Campanelli, on her cell phone as she drove slowly north on Route 110 about 4 a.m., looking for the Long Island Expressway, Suffolk police and her family said. Davis, the lone occupant of a GMC pickup, struck Scherr's Nissan 200SX from behind near the intersection of Schwab Road, throwing her car off the road and into a utility pole, police said.

Scherr was driving to Valley Stream from Campanelli's Kings Park home when she encountered a road closure and got lost, her family said.

Moments after the crash, Davis was spotted in a nearby parking lot, where he got out of his truck, checked the damage and drove away, said Det. Sgt. Bruce Markgraf. At about the same moment, Chris Manganello, 39, a fire dispatcher and volunteer firefighter from Huntington Station, was awakened by an alert of a "heavy rescue" about a mile and a half away on Route 110.

As he rushed out the door of his home, Manganello said he spotted a truck with a broken right headlight and other front-end damage headed down a residential street just north of Jericho Turnpike. Manganello said that he smelled burning rubber and antifreeze coming from the truck.

"I got a slow look inside and saw both air bags hanging out and thought . . . hey, this truck, it's coming from that direction, there is a good chance it's connected," he said.

Manganello jumped in his own vehicle and followed the truck for about half-mile through the neighborhood.

At one point, Davis pulled over, got out and stared at Manganello, who remained in his car "because I didn't know what this guy was going to do."

"He just shrugged his shoulders, like, 'What are you doing?'" Manganello said.

After pulling over a second time, Davis started to walk toward the firefighter but returned to the vehicle after Manganello shouted at him. He continued to follow the truck until it pulled into a driveway on Monett Place.

After Manganello alerted a resident of a nearby home to call 911, two Suffolk officers arrived and later spotted a light go on in a nearby backyard on Hofstra Drive.

Davis was found there hiding behind a tree, said Markgraf. He credited Manganello with the quick arrest.

"This guy really went out of his way to make this happen," he said.

Davis refused to take a Breathalyzer but submitted to a field sobriety test that he failed, police said. Detectives also got a warrant to take blood; the results were not available yesterday.

Davis' truck is registered to Davis Aircraft Products Co. Inc., of Bohemia. A business registry lists Douglas Davis as a vice president. Messages left at the business and at Davis' home were not returned.

My DH remembers her BF from High School.

You know, my friend was killed six years ago by a drunk driver... I used to keep so much of this to myself. I would hear stories like this, get angry and not do much about it besides upset myself. Now, since Kenneth, I am not doing that anymore - when I see a story, I post it. I just want people to be aware. When I hear about something, I contact the D.A. overseeing the case to let them know how outraged I am and I ask them to do the very best they can. I look up the victim's families if they are listed and send them a sympathy card. I don't know them - but I've been in a similar place. I'm lucky we didn't lose Kenneth all-together but I'm still waiting for ALL of him to come back to us... So, I send them a card to show my support like so many strangers did for me when Ken was hurt. It meant a lot to me - I hope it can comfort them a little.

I should have searched to see if this was posted sooner - but, I always go out of my way to post. I spent six years silent about this epidemic - no more.

I know - I agree... I just watched it also. They are relentless - but, the family did have to let them into the house in order to obtain that 'interview'. When Ken was first hurt we were chased through the parking lot of NUMC - my DH, sister, and I were RUNNING away from a mob of reporters. It was the most unbelievable experience of my life - very upsetting. They staked out my parents house, my house, neighbors, etc. We gave them bits and pieces when we were ready to but we always tried to keep it private. Everyone grieves differently - perhaps the family wanted to "vent" to the news - IDK. That is not how we did it personally but that's us.

Vin said he is such a nice guy. I know, I feel terrible for them. The part that makes me angry is that it happened in Suffolk... that means, the Suffolk DA's office will handle the case. Lets just say there is a NIGHT AND DAY difference in terms of sentencing that DUI perps in Nassau face vs. those in Suffolk.

Suffolk gives them a slap on the wrist - I'm going to keep up on this story and, sadly, I'm afraid I'll be updating this in about a year stating that the guy (at the most) got 6 months in jail -- maybe less.

I really wish Kathleen Rice and Nassau was handling this. Chat Icon For her poor parents, seeing this man that left their daughter for dead after hitting her like that get some REAL justice might be the ONLY thing that comforts them even a little bit.

Re: Lost woman killed in fatal DWI hit & run:

While I condemn the drunk SOB who killed her, I have seen way too many times people lost, on a cell phone, driving all over the place....completely forgetting that they share the road with others and just looking for their destination. Driving at 30mph with a sudden complete stop with no signal to turn when they finally found what they were looking for.

I am not defending that she deserved to be killled. Nobody does. I am sad for her family, fiance and friends.

I do believe she was pulled over on the side of the road, and wasn't on the roadway itself

I know the article doesn't say that - but that is what they said on News 12 this morning Chat Icon

I did not know this... This is just SICK. When is this going to stop??? Doesn't everyone see that they are slowly killing us all one by one?!! I'm sorry - I've just had enough of this shiit!!!! Look at this poor girl - from Nassau, not familiar with Suffolk - all she probably knew was how to get to and from her BF's house -- she gets a detour BECAUSE of a drunk driver, is pulled over trying to find her way and is hit and killed by ANOTHER drunk driver!!! WHEN THE H E L L ARE WE AND THESE PEOPLE GOING TO WAKE UP?? When are we going to say enough is enough??

So, three women 25 years of age and under die on Saturday alone??

This kind of SICK coincidence reminds me of when Katie Flynn's grandfather was read his last rights because they thought he was going to die... turns out, he was able to survive but he's injured badly... the priest who gave him last rights was killed by a drunk driver less than a year later!!!!!

I'm sorry - vent over. Chat Icon

Re: Lost woman killed in fatal DWI hit & run:

So sad. Reading things like this saddens and outrages me. When are people going to learn that you can't do this? We have got to reach a point where if you have a single drink you shouldn't drive. It's extreme but maybe it will make people think twice about getting behind the wheel. Someone we are close to was hit by a drunk driver and luckily they survived but it didn't come with out a price. What kind of a person leaves someone after hitting them, it's nauseating! My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends they shouldn't have to go through this.
