Low platelets...worried
Hi everyone. I got a call from my doctor last night that my platelet levels were low. I have an appointment to go over it in more detail but he explained I will be tested every two weeks and may not be offered an epidural or spinal block in the event of a c section and will have to go completely under. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks so much in advance!!
(was also told I surprisingly failed the 1 hour glucose test. Oy. Not an awesome phone call all together).

Re: Low platelets...worried
are you on blood thinners? how far along are you? they usually want to see a certain level of platelets before doing anaestesia, in order to avoid excessive bleeding. i would not worry now. platelets level fluctuate, they will just have to monitor them

Mine were a little low...
Wait until you get re-tested before you get concerned.
Really low platelets is VERY rare.

Re: Low platelets...worried
i had a problem with my platelets with my first pregnancy. they found it around 34 weeks. i went to high risk and was at the dr 3x/week to have it monitered as well as biophysical profiles, each time i went my ptls were a different count. back then it was below 70,000 no epi. i went to 41 weeks and was induced, they had my blood type ready just incase, and it turned out that day my count was up & i was able to get an epi. its just something they need to monitor, im sure they will tell you to be carefu about cutting yourself. dont worry too much now, im sure it will work out.

Re: Low platelets...worried
my platelets became dangerously low when i developed HELLP syndrome in the hospital. i was already admitted for pre-eclampsia and one night my platelets plummeted and my liver enzymes skyrocketed. they were going to induce (i was 33w1d) but the baby was breech so i had to have an emergency C under general anesthesia and was not awake for it. im not gonna sugar coat it, it was a horribly traumatic experience, but i had A LOT more issues than simply low platelets. if you want to read the whole story here is my birth story.
please FM if you have any questions. it def doesn't sound like your low platelets are due to the issues mine were, so chances are that they will somehow be able to treat and manage it prior to delivery. good luck!!
