lump sum paid time off vs sick/personal/vaca time?

do you get a lump sum of paid time off (ie - 15 days to use for everything) or a set amount of days for vacation, set amount for sick, etc?

when i joined, i got one lump sum of what i felt was a generous amount of days and i was fine with that, vs other people who got less vaca days, but also got sick days. now they've switched policy so that everyone has lump time like i do and people are complaining - i don't get it! they're taking on the attitude of 'i'm not getting paid for being sick!' personally, i think these are all the people who were taking advantage of their sick days b/c now with lump time, you can use it however you want, but when its done, its done so it would be wise not to use it for sickness unless youre really sick.

do you think these complaints are silly or is it just me? bear in mind that the amount of lump paid time off is a generous amount.

I have a lump sum amount. This is our second year doing it this way. Our plan gives people anywhere from 15-29 days, depending on level and years of service.

Although I do like being able to use all of my days however I wish (especially being someone who never used all of their sick days), we all lost 2 days when the policy was implemented. It was a big blow for morale, especially for the people who are on the lower end of the spectrum. Are the people you work with getting the same number of days overall?

It's not all one lump sum.

I get 20 days vacation
2 personal days
unlimited sick days

Since I work in the land of billable hours, if I go way above my target billables and did excellent work for the year, no one would bat an eyelash if I went over my allotted vacation time.

That said, they could offer me 6 months vacation and I'd still have to hit my target billables...

I get a lump sum, but its a fairly generous 23 days a year.

My old job had separate pools, but I never used my sick days. Here I can just take more vacation, so thats better for me!

. Other people have all mixed things, like it could be 10 days vacation and 5 sick days or 15 days vacation and 3 sick days, etc - our company vp gets 20 days, i know that for a fact, so i find it hard to believe that the people complaining were getting more than that. i just think its absolutely ridiculous to be complaining about something like that in an economy like this. they should be happy to have a job. and besides, its 20 days paid time off, total. not like its 2 days off. Here they say I have:

10 Vacation Days
4 Personal Days
2 Sick Days
and my birthday.

But you can use them however you want.... so basically I have 17 days off

I used to have a lump sum of days but my company switched to separate days.

I preferred lump sum b/c I rarely get sick and was able to use most of my days for personal time or vaca.

The one okay thing is that my 10 sick days rollover year to year, but who if I will be there long enough to benefit from that?

I prefer lump sum days!

Re: lump sum paid time off vs sick/personal/vaca time?

We have lump sum here. We get 15 days "Paid Time Off" (PTO).

We used to have two weeks vaca and unlimited sick and personal time but they switched to lump sum b/c some people were abusing the unlimited sick/personal time.

It sucked in the beginning b/c I suppose you could say we did lose out on "days off" but I'm over it.
