this happen to any nyc teachers who took maternity time not paid..
i took 6 weeks paid ( used my days) and then 6 week unpaid for my baby last year. My summer checks had money deducted from each check bc they said that your summer pay is based on the fact that you are gonna work all year long( well 10 months) since i was off payroll i loose money in my summer pay?

You accumulate 1/10 a month, which is your summer pay. I started my teaching job mid-year and only got half the amount I would have my first year, and because I only came back from maternity leave in May, I got a lump sum for the summer, with some money deducted for the time I was out.

yes, this happened to me. I had no idea. I got my checks yesterday and was shocked. Do other districts do this or just the city?

Re: this happen to any nyc teachers who took maternity time not paid..
I was only out from April - June on leave and they took out 5 days pay.........Figured it out with payroll secy. that I would not miss any pay since I borrowed days and grace but they made a mistake. She is looking into it. I was beyond shocked and almost in tears.............

mom2tom, I don't get it. I borrowed days too, what does that have to do with it?? i'm so confused, because my payroll secretary said today that they base your summer salary on working 10 months. If you don't work the full 10 months, they deduct, it doesn't matter what kind of leave you take. Is she wrong? I hate the city!

Even if you take 6 weeks (using your days) paid, you lose money in your summer pay too??
So it is true, if you have days in your CAR you can use them for maternity leave??

All districts who pay their employees on a 26 pay period schedule should do this.
Teachers are 10 month employees. If they are paid over 12 months, each paycheck is lower than it would be had they been paid only during the 10 months that they actually work. Each paycheck does not truly reflect the amount the teachers actually earn during the pay period b/c the salary is stretched out over the 12 months. Therefore, if someone takes a 6 week unpaid leave of absence, simply not giving them a paycheck during those 6 weeks doesn't quite cover the actual amount that person would have earned over the 6 weeks. This is why the payroll department is taking out more money from other paychecks. Hope this makes sense.

this sums it up for my district too - I have asked around and this is what happened to a lot of my coworkers as well
