Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
Here is my scenario-
I have been working out steadily (cardio and strength) for three months and a lot of it includes jogging. I am doing C25K and I am in week three. I do my jogging on the treadmill although I will have a jogging stroller as of Tuesday and hope to take some of my jogs outside.
This is the problem-my body feels like it can go, my legs are fine, arms are fine, I am mentally ready to go. My lungs stop me. I don't feel like it is getting better either, although maybe I am wrong. I am in a lot of pain, it becomes hard to breathe and I start wheezing. I know I have issues with breathing during strength training-if the weight gets heavy, I don't breathe. I do have sinus issues and I am on Singulair. I am frustrated because I feel like I could be a lot further and my body is so ready to go, but I just can't breathe.
I do have the a/c going and the fan on the treadmill-could that be the culprit? I googled it and read that it could be either my lungs getting into shape or exercise induced asthma. Should I call my doctor and ask or is this normal? TIA!

Re: Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
I don't have asthma and have this problem too...
I have to really concentrate on taking deep breaths through my nose and mouth and then fully exhaling. It really helps me a lot...

Re: Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
I have this problem.
It used to be EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.
but, I found that concentrating and on working on my breathing as well as posture surprisingly has all helped...
There are some bad days where my lungs feel it and hurt immediately, but it is a lot less often now.
I'd suggest yoga and breathing exercises. When jogging, focus on breathing in and out. and stand up straight!! think about your posture.
hopefully this helps you too and prevents you from having to make a (probably) unnecessary trip to the doctor!

Re: Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
My first thought is slow down. I get distracted counting, but slow runs should be 3steps breathing in and 2/3 out.
Second, you cannot get in enough air just through your nose. The best way is to breathe in through your mouth and nose...but that canbe hard to master. Breathing through your mouth alone is way better than your nose alone.
Make sure you are relaxed. I have to remind myself to lower my shoulders...unclench my hands..etc.

Re: Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
Given the wheezing that you suffer both during the running and when lifting heavy weights, I would absolutely see a doctor about it. Each time you have trouble breathing and wheeze, that is actually your body not getting enough (or any) oxygen. You might need an emergency inhaler, or a daily controller. There are plenty of athletic people that have exercise-induced asthma.

Re: Lung pain/breathing issues and jogging
Thank you everyone. I asked my doctor and he said with my symptoms, he wants me to come in for testing and possibly an inhaler.
