major amilentum problems---please help if you can
my daughter (6 weeks) is having formula/diaper rash/feeding problems. she poops about 8 times a day and has had a terrible diaper rash that is starting to clear up.
we tried soy for a few days, gentlease and today the ped is having her try alimentum. it may be a milk allergy but she hasn't been tested yet.
she eats around 4oz and usually burps after each feeding. she has spit up most of each bottle of the alimentum and hasn't burped much today. and just a little while ago she projectile vomited the ENTIRE bottle all over herself and me. it seemed like way more than 4 oz even though that must have been what it was. it was about 30 minutes after she had eaten (and had a bath after she ate).
why would she not be tolerating the alimentum?? she did not throw up with the gentlease at all.
does anyone have any ideas? has anyone experienced this before? i will be calling the ped again tomorrow morning.

Try Nutramigen. It is the Enfamil version Alumentin. My DS was on Nutramigen and then was switched to Alumentin. He had a severe reaction to it. He cried all the time. He was spitting up all the time. And he never was a spitter upper. After 2 days of that I put him back on Nutramigen. He was fine within 24 hours of switching him back....

James is on Alimentum and still spits up a TON! I thought that with this formula, it was supposed to decrease that. Even with the combo of Zantac and the Alimentum, he's still a major spitter.
Is your a reflux baby? Has she reacted this way with other formulas?

Re: major amilentum problems---please help if you can
Allimentum has some different ingredients than Enfamil products and some babies do not tolerate well, especially with milk pro allergy.
Allimentum's second ingredient is table sugar. The issue with table sugar, besides the obvious, is that when a milk pro allergy is going on, the enzyme sucrase is the first to be removed from the brush boarder - therfore sucrose can not be digested and ferments in LO's gut.
It also contains MCT oil, which is a non needed ingredient - its for babies with fat malabsorption not allergy
The nutramigen (either w/enflora lgg or regular) do not contain table sugar or MCT oil. They also contain the proper DHA levels needed for brain development, unlike Similac products.
The powder nutramigen w/enflora lgg has a probiotic that helps to heal babies gut that has been damaged from allergy. I would 100% recommend this product. It is far superior than nutramigen or allimentum, otherwise stick with nutramigen. It is a better choice than allimentum.
HTH!

Re: major amilentum problems---please help if you can
We started with a sample of Alimentum (given to us by ped.) when DD first started having major problems with colic and spit up. She responded awfully to it. It is VERY high in sugar. I went back to the ped. and they suggested Nutramigen, which they prefer, but they did not have samples of (the reason they had given me alimentum instead.)
Nutramigen was better for her belly and the zantac helped to neutralize the acid of the reflux, but these formulas are THINNER and actually may INCREASE spitting up. When babies spit up, they need a thicker formula. When multiple issues exist, you either have to thicken the formula with cereal which we did not want to do or just accept that as long as it is happy spit up and baby is gaining weight it is going to be ok.

You need to work with your peditrician and a pediatric gastorenterologist. My DD had projectile vomiting and reflux until we got it under control with Alimentum and Zantac. Some tests need to be run to check for allergies and a condition called pyloric stenosis. Do not keep changing formula brands until you consult your pediatrician. All of these changes are not good for a newborn.

It takes a few days for their little bellies to get use to a new formula. Especially if you have switched a few times already. DD spit up more then she ate for 3 days when first starting nutramigen. It also looks like a lot more then it is because the formula is thinner, which also means it comes up easier and they spit up more. She has been on it for 3 weeks now and finally is spitting up less. Good Luck

I have a can of nutramigen liquid, if you wanna try it, i can put it in the mail today or tomorrow for you. I got it as a sample from my dr office, but my son doest do well with the liquid formula it has to be powder.

We had the same problem with Alimentum. DS had to be put on Elecare. He still spits up, but at least it's not projectile.
