Making a christening gown out of your wedding dress?

Have any of you had this done? I figure I'm never going to wear my dress again...(even if I wanted to, I've lost about 75 lbs. since the wedding and it's SWIMMING on me). I'm really thinking of having this done, I was just wondering if anyone else had done it.

Thanks! Chat Icon

My mom made a bassinet skirt out of HER wedding dress. It is so beautiful, and my idea, because I don't want to chop up my dress just yet!

I doubt I'll do it for a christening gown.

I am doing this. I was going to sew it myself, but things have become overwhelming with our apartment flooding and us moving soon that I'm taking it to a dressmaker near me. (She altered my wedding gown inthe first place)

If I were Christening a child, I would do it. But we are Jewish. I wish there was something ceremonial I could make for it to start a family tradition.

I wanted to do it but we aren't doing a Dedication or anything. So I was thinking of making a baby blanket out of it. Or something. It's just going to waste away in the closet.

Re: Making a christening gown out of your wedding dress?

I have always wanted to do this. We have asked my MIL to make the christening outfit and one we can hopefully use for other children someday.
I'm not sure how to still incorporate using my dress for something special for the baby to use to hand down.

I was thinking MIL's outfit for part of the day and still making another outfit for the party but it still doesn't seem "special enough" then.

I absolutely LOVE this idea. However, I can't sew, so I am hoping my Mom will. If not a christening dress, then something for our little girl down the road.

Re: Making a christening gown out of your wedding dress?

My mom is a dressmaker so she dosnt know yet but she is going to make a christening gown out of my train. I actually had a detachable train so she can use that with out destroying the whole gown.

The other thing I have seen is a white "christening" hat made out of the gown. It can be used for a boy or girl.It is a square piece of fabric that is some how folded and and tacked together on the corners. There is actually a saying that goes along with it something to the fact of you wear this on your christening day and then remove the corner stiches and use it as a hanky on your wedding day and if you happen to be a boy give it to your furture wife to use and that will be her something old or borrowed.
I actually had one but forgot all about it until the day after my wedding so I never got to use it. Amazingly enough my mother forgot about it too.
