Making Cards in Photoshop - Tips & Links
I've noticed that alot ladies have asked for help with making cards in PS so here are some links & info that I hope help.
Just remember, there is usually more than one way to do something in PS, and there is no ONE way to make a greeting card. It's whatever you want it to be!
Now I am NO Photoshop expert, by any means, but I am learning and I love playing. I took a course in college, but that was years ago.
That said, here are some tips and tricks that will hopefully help:
- Look around at other cards (on Shutterfly, Snapfish, etc) for a layout you like, for inspiration. When you see a card you like, figure out what it is you like about it - the colors, the fonts, the borders, etc. What would you change about it?
- browse the web for borders and graphics that you may want to add (snowflakes, ornaments, etc)
- Use hi -res pics (the ones that came right out of your camera) only for cards
- I recommend setting the dpi (resolution) in PS to 300
- Set the document size to 5x7 (or whatever size card you are trying to make) and make sure to give yourself extra room if using Winkflash to print (they cut off alot for some reason)
- Work in layers so you work non destructively on photos and on your project. (Note that text and shapes automatically go onto their own layers)
- Open your pic separately and do a preliminary resize there first, then bring it over to your card, drop it onto it's own layer, and THEN resize it to fit in your card perfectly. Remember to do a SAVE AS (or don't save your changes) and give it a new name when resizing your original hi-res pics so you don't mess up the original.
This one shows you how to draw shapes to create a card: Create a card
Lots of links to ready made downloadable greeting cards - not photocards exactly- but good for inspiration http://www.photoshopsupport.com/photoshop-blog/05/12/06-free-holiday-greeting-cards.html
And here's a very detailed step-by-step one: Greeting card step by step
I'm not a fan of that particular card but I guarantee that if you just sit there and follow the tutorial step by step, you'll learn a ton about photoshop and get some ideas about what you'd like do for your card
Also Vistaprint has Photoshop template file downloads. You don't have to order the cards through them but if you use these templates it'll help ensure that your color settings and resolution are correct for printing.
This is for the folded card but if you browse the site, you'll find other sizes.
If I think of any other tips, I'll add to this thread and I hope others do too.
Hope this helps
