Making small talk - how would you rate yourself?

I just read a post on the rel board about ILs calling you for your bday (or something along those lines)... and mine don't but I'm so grateful for that b/c I am terrible at small talk.

I really suck at it. Lots of awkward silences, etc. The ONLY thing I can think of that's 'safe' to talk about - is the weather, or "I can't believe it's insertdayofweek - this week is going slow/fast!". Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So - are you good or bad at small talk?

I'm pretty good at it. Once a guy friend said he was "shocked" I had nothing to say to a mutual friend's wife because I "could talk to a wall". Chat Icon
Still to this day, not sure how to take that one!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am pretty good at it, I am good at making all kinds of talk. Talking is one of my skills. I can sometimes feel intimidated by people, but I usually find something to talk about! And if I can't find something to talk about, I find a way out of the situation sharpish!!!

A few weeks ago my friend sat me down next to her friend, who played keyboards in my favorite band for years and said, right, Rachel, this is Candida, and she RAN OFF and left me with this girl, so I found something to talk about (this week my expert topic was Brit Bands in NYC in the mid nineties...) And we got on brilliantly...small talk is my friend. My propensity for making random comments sometimes comes in handy!

I really don't do small talk so well. I'm the person in a conversation who nods, smiles, says "yea" and then runs away as fast as I can.

I really hate making small talk. I love having "real" conversations with people, but hate being stuck in situations where I really have to think of something to say. I'm a much better listener.

Re: Making small talk - how would you rate yourself?

I'm pretty good at it. I don't blab on & on, but if I'm stuck in a room with another person and there's silence, I'm fairly good at asking questions and starting a conversation - doesn't mean I don't feel awkward doing it, but sometimes it's a necessary evil Chat Icon

Re: Making small talk - how would you rate yourself?

I'm a quiet person in general, so I am not really good at small talk. The only small talk I am really capable of is about my work.

I'm HORRIBLE. I try, I really, really do and I've gotten better, but I'm just a bad small talker, it doesn't come naturally to me at all.

Re: Making small talk - how would you rate yourself?

I like to think I'm pretty good at small talk. I can usually talk to anyone about *almost* anything. There are certain topics I prefer not to discuss such as politics. But other than that I can hold my own.

me too Chat Icon I'll talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime, and sometimes (although rarely) I can have an opposite day where I cant be bothered. Chat Icon

but I HATE having senseless, useless conversation that's just an "awkward moment" killer. I dont see the need or purpose for awkard moments, i'll even start up a funny conversation in an elevator. life's too short ! Chat Icon

I honestly think I could make a living doing it.

I HATE awkward silence so I do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to avoid it.

That usually leads to me blabbing on and on to get the ball rolling.........

Same here.. I could talk to anyone..

But I don't think it's such a bad thing.. better than awkward silence..

and a lot of people say I come off as being quite friendly Chat Icon
