Wholesomebabyfood.com is fantastic. i use that more than any book. I also have Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron.
We use our regular Cuisinart food processor for most stuff. We also bought a food mill, which is good for things like potatoes, and Fresh Baby food trays. After the cubes are frozen, we transfer them to ziploc freezer bags.

I don't really use a book either, but DD is only 5 months so I haven't experimented since we are still introducing foods.
I have the Beaba that I got for my shower and it's awesome for most things.
For squash though, I just cook it in the oven on 400 degrees for about an hour (in an inch of water, meat side down). Then I scoop it and put in the mini food processor with water until it gets to the consistency I want.
You can do anything really with a food processor. I got the Beaba as a gift but you don't have to spend the money on it.

Yes a food processor, blender, or even that "Magic Bullet" handheld stick is good! And I also recommend wholesomebabyfood.com... just as good as any book I skimmed in the bookstore!
I'm not an expert though, I only made a fraction of the food my kids ate... probably 2/3 of their food was jarred.

Re: making your own baby food..recommend your fav. book
Hey Meg, I just started making my boys baby food last night. LOL. I just boiled everything and the put it in my magic bullet to puree and then in the trays to freeze. This morning I took them out of the trays and put the cubes into ziplok freezer bags. I need to post on serving size now. I made chicken with pears, chicken with apples and sweet potatoes. Today I am going to make carrots and peas.

I like "The Baby Food Bible" - it's got a lot of really interesting information in it.

May I suggest steaming most things. Steaming keeps a lot more of the nutrients in the foods. Baking also keeps alot of the nutrients in.

I also agree with one of the posters who suggested baking or steaming the veggies/fruits instead of boiling them.

I peel the foods, if need be ... de- seed them as well if need be and cut them into small pieces, then I steam them in the ziplock steamer bags ... throw it in the blender and viola!
So far I have made: applesauce, pears, sweet potatoes, peas and carrots!!
Its great I freeze it too ... and DS loves it!
