Re: Mama's that rock/ed your DC to sleep
at around 6 months, he was getting so heavy and even though he still wanted to be rocked, he would fight it at the same time. So one day i put him in the crib for his nap and turned him on his side and held his hand and he fell asleep! so we did that for a while and once he was comfortable going to sleep that way consistently, we then started leaving the room and letting him play till he fell asleep for naps. so everything was in steps. oh and for Bedtime we did CIO but are lucky b/c he cries for 2-3 min the MOST (if at all) and falls right asleep. now for the most part he goes to sleep for naps and bed on his own (he's 8 1/2 months old). Once in awhile if hes having a hard time going for his nap i rock him for like 30 sec and put him in the crib and he does well with that, i think he just needs the cuddles once in a while

Re: Mama's that rock/ed your DC to sleep
I thought my arms were going to fall off too! It was SO bad .. my back, too.
It had just become too much, so one night I decided that I'd just rock her in the glider. Hold her, but just rock her while I was sitting down. DD fought it for a few days, but I figured I was still holding her and comforting her, so it wasn't like CIO or anything (DD was a little over 4 mos. old at this time). I just stayed calm and rocked her back and forth until she calmed down and finally went to sleep. It was a wonderful bedtime routine after that.
(It has since changed - she can now put herself to sleep, but that's a whole other story! )

Honestly, I think DS was around 6 mos when I stopped rocking him to a full sleep. Now I just give him his nighttime bottle (while holding/rocking him) and when the bottle is done I burp for minute or so then lay him down. He's adjusted well to falling asleep on his own.

I just stopped rocking one day and held her quietly, thankfully, it worked, I was very lucky.

tell me... tell me
In a nutshell, DD would wake up NUMEROUS times throughout the night looking for her pacifier. DH and I would run up and down the steps all night long giving it to her (she would fall back to sleep instantly, but it was beyond exhausting). We then decided to put a few pacifiers in her crib so she could do it herself. That worked - for like a week. Then she just wouldn't fall asleep unless we rocked her back to sleep. It got to the point where we were putting her in bed with us since we had to get up for work the next morning. This is when I knew things had gotten out of control and we needed to do something (ok, so this isn't exactly a "nutshell" ).
After talking it through with a few people, I realized that I needed to tackle the situation. Since DD was being rocked to sleep, she didn't know how to put herself back to sleep on her own. So I realized she needed some "coaching" and it my job to help her learn to put herself to sleep. I had ALWAYS been against CIO -- but couldn't think of any other way. SO ... we employed the CIO technique with DD (up to the point I was comfortable with) and thankfully, it worked out really well (again, that's a WHOLE other story).
I do still rock DD for a minute or two as part of our bedtime routine, but she's 100% awake at that time, and goes down in her crib fully awake and puts herself to sleep. It was a LONG road to get to this point, but I'm very happy with where we are now.

Re: Mama's that rock/ed your DC to sleep
DS was being rocked. Now he falls asleep in our bed on our pillows. He looks forward to it when he is tired. He no longer wants to sleep in our arms or anywhere with sound, light, etc...
I am working on next step. Putting him to sleep in his crib.
