Who else has seen Manchester by the Sea? Just saw this afternoon. My God, what a movie!!! Definitely will stay with me for a little bit. Casey Affleck was incredible!

I saw it and enjoyed that it was a bit of a slow burn kind of film....making you wait and work through what happened with these characters.
However, I don't think Casey Affleck's performance warrants all the hype that people have made about him. So many critics are like "just hand him the Oscar!" and while I know the point of his performance is of a broken man who has a lot of anger and pain hiding just under the surface, I was not insanely blown away by it.
I have found many either love the film or absolutely hate it - there are not as many in-betweeners like myself.

Re: Manchester by the Sea
There was another thread on this a few weeks ago Click me
I just saw it yesterday and thought it was good. But as MrsPJB2007 I don't see all the hype surrounding Casey Affleck.
Something that was really distracting to me was the music being played over some scenes. Too somber and really bothered my ears. If that makes sense?

Thanks MsSissy, didn't know there was a thread already. I was really blown away with Casey Affleck, I just thought his perfomance was so layered. But I also havent't seen the films that the other actors are nominated for! What I don't understand is Michelle Williams being nominated for best supporting actress...she was good, but I don't think she was in the movie more than 10 minutes! I can see what MrsPJB2007 said aboout loving or hating it...two couples walked out during the movie yesterday, it was a small theater , think there were only 20 people to begin with. I was just so affected by it and wondered if anybody else felt the same way.

Re: Manchester by the Sea
She was nominated? I didn't realize that! Sorry but that's ridiculous. Because like you said she was barely in it. How she can go up against Viola Davis from Fences I don't understand. Although personally I think Viola Davis being nominated for supporting actress was an insult. She shouldve been up for best actress. Her role in that movie was just as important and strong as Denzel Washington's. And he received the best actor nomination.
ETS: I think Naomie Harris from Moonlight should have been given the nomination over Michelle Williams.

I agree with this.
Michelle Williams is an Oscar nominee darling for some reason, she's been nominated a few times before.
The scene where she confronts Casey Affleck towards the end, was heart breaking but it didn't warrant an Oscar nom for me.

Re: Manchester by the Sea
I've been thinking about this movie again. Honestly, it kind of haunts me. Remember when the friends told the hockey coach that "the story is bullsh!t" and then the boat yard owners wife said she never wanted him around there again? They never really explained why there was such hate towards him. The only thing I'm thinking is that everyone thought he deliberately set the house on fire. He was conveniently not home when it happened. Also, he was surprised he wasn't getting arrested. I feel like they may have edited out parts that would have explained all of that further. What is your take?

I thought it was that they blamed him (and he blamed himself) because he was drunk and he left the house. And that if he hadn't been drunk, he would have been back to the house sooner. I didn't think they thought he actually set the fire, but I guess it could be that too.

I thought it was because they blamed him for being drunk and doing drugs that night. And if I remember correctly he took care of the fire before leaving and he forgot to put the screen back in front of the fireplace. And even though it was an accident he blamed himself and was probably surprised he wasn't arrested since he was so reckless.
As for the "the story is bullish!t" comment I was a bit confused by that also.
