mashed potatoes

i was making dinner while my friend was over last night. i made mashed potatoes from real potatoes. my friend said that she didn't even know you could make mashed potatoes from real potatoes...

so my question is: do you make your mashed potatoes from scratch or from the box?

just curious! Chat Icon

Re: mashed potatoes

Never from a box. But if i am low on time, there are pouches of natural, organic real potato flakes that I get from Costco. You need to add all the regular mashed potato ingredients to it (milk, butter, etc) but it saves you from having to cook and mash the potatos.

I can NEVER make mashed potatoes from a box.

Re: mashed potatoes

Maybe I am doing something wrong but how is making real mashed potatoes just as easy as doing it out of the box?

It takes me TOPS 8 minutes to make mashed potatoes for a box.

Maybe there is a secret I am missing and maybe I can make real ALL the time bc now I dont have time for that.

Re: mashed potatoes

Not anymore! My mom NEVER made mashed potatoes from a box however, when I got married and started my own life I did make them from a box. That is, until I told my mom this and she got mad at me lol. since then just home made mashed potatoes. To me, it make the world of difference!

No, you're right. Making homemade mashed potatoes takes longer but only because you have to boil the potatoes for a while. Once they are cooked seasoning and mashing them is easy..

Re: mashed potatoes

I never had boxed or container mashed potatoes until I moved out of my moms house, we always had "real" mashed potatoes whenever we had them. So for this reason, my mom is still only allowed to make "real" mashed potatoes for holidays and events.

At my house for convenience I make packaged mashed potatoes because DH doesn't care

Re: mashed potatoes

from a box is like glue! Yuck!

I normally make them from scratch. Lot's of butter and half and half!

I did have a "refrigerated" kind last summer at a BBQ and thought they were actually really good. Don't remember the brand though.

Re: mashed potatoes

real potatoes...i dont think it takes too much longer and it tastes so much better. the key is to cut the potatoes into small pieces so they cook faster!!

Yup. I boil the potatoes covered for 20 minutes. Drain, add softened butter and milk (sometimes some garlic powder) and smash smash smash. I use a wooden spoon because we like it a little bit chunky.
