The real question is, when are we going to learn to just live with the fact that covid isnt going anywhere? Masks, vaccines, all of that and opinions on the subjects aside... its never going to go away. Cases will never be zero. Is this really going to go on forever?

I think the issue is that hospitals are getting overrun again. My sister is a nurse at a local hospital and they have had to open up overflow rooms.

It’s 1 or 2. We are going to a concert this weekend and previously it was vaccine or test but now it’s vaccine only and no mask. If they allowed unvaccinated - everyone would need to mask.

\

Where is the concert?

The Paramount

Lovely. So no one unvaccinated can go until at least January 15th. Sorry but that is ridiculous as at least those will have to get a test and KNOW they are not sick while the rest of the crowd could be spreading it.

Is it me or are people NOT using their brains for ANY of this?????

The most hysterical part is that all these people are allowed indoors, packed in shoulder to shoulder with NO MASK.
Because they have a vaccine card from months ago.
My friend uses her vaccine card still but tested negative for antibodies.
But her card will still work to get her in to this place , unmasked- and she is as vaccinated as me right now.
You cannot make this shit up
I feel like I'm in the twilight zone

Yup and I see it all the time packed places. The thinking is asinine. It just doesn't make sense and NO ONE sits back who makes these decisions and says, hmmm...this doesn't sound right?

And we wonder why Covid is spreading.

Seems to be a pandemic of the vaccinated.
Not because the vaccinated necessary get Covid more than unvaccinated, but because the vaccinated are given free reign to spread it unmasked, un-quarantined and unchecked.
As a reward for being good listeners.

I really wish this country and our officials believed in science more

Exactly, it all makes no sense. I tell you, the more educated you get, the more you lose your common sense. I see it ALL.THE.TIME from not only people higher up but friends and family. I sit there and say they are SO smart they are stupid.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm fully vaccinated and still wear my mask because I know that the vaccine isn't 100% like they lead us to believe at first. So, I AM attending events and eating out in NYC, etc, etc and still wearing a mask. Cases are on the rise and doesn't seem to matter if you are vaccinated...so I am smart enough to realize that and still wear my mask.

But you were sold on if you get the vaccine, you will be protected and won't have to wear a mask.

When was the last time you got tested? I would rather be tested than have to rely on a mask that doesn't work anyway.

Let's be clear. Masks do work to stop the spread. Are they 100%? No, nothing is. Do they slow down spread of disease. YES! That does not take much sense to figure that out.

CoVid or not...with Flu A ramping up to visit many for the holidays...I am happy to continue to wear a mask. I don't want the flu.

Do you usually get the flu?

Why would that matter?

If you (in general) get the flu on a regular basis or have a lot in the past, I can see being worried about it.

I have never been worried about the flu and honestly I think maybe I have had it twice in my entire life.

Who would want the flu? Masks WILL decrease chances of spreading illness. You said they don't work anyway... that's false information.

Why do you twist everything I say? Doesn’t make you look any better s d me any worse.
I never said I wanted the flu but I don’t worry about it, and never had all these years.
I also believe masks work but NOT 100% and should be a choice not a mandate.

Copied and pasted from your post right in this quoted section...

"When was the last time you got tested? I would rather be tested than have to rely on a mask that doesn't work anyway."

Yup doesn’t work 100%. Happy now?

No not really. I’m asking this in all seriousness. Putting all nastiness aside. I swear I am. Even though nothing is 100%, and I can understand almost the hesitancy or not at wanting to vaccinate since that is putting a substance into your body, knowing that wearing a mask is at least effective in preventing the spread, even though not 100%, what is the justification for not wearing one? If you could protect even one person at risk of dying from Covid OR the flu, why wouldn’t you do it? To take a political stand against what you think is control? Is that worth it? Let’s say COVID is only a flu like virus. And both the flu and Covid we KNOW are or can be deadly to some, living through the hell that has been this two years, why can’t we learn something and be considerate and just wear a dang mask? Ok, some are asthmatic and the mask suffocates them. Fine. But for those of us without serious health issues, why is it so hard for us to wear a mask to protect THEM? That’s what irritates me. And why I get so funky about the subject. Just my two cents. Not being nasty. Not in the least bit. I just can’t wrap my head around that. So to me, it seems very selfish and part of this ME culture that I can’t comprehend.

I agree with all of this. I understand vaccine hesitancy, but I can not understand people’s refusal to wear a mask.

My mom works at a grocery store and said people are screaming in her face refusing to wear a mask. I honestly can’t believe people are like this. She didn’t make the mandate. She’s a 64 year old woman just trying to do her job.

Maybe because they fired so many that it is not that they are getting overrun but they don’t have enough staff. Also, just like before Covid, there are people that run to the hospital for every little thing.

That is just horrible and that is why there should not be a mandate. Let it be optional and not cause all of this to the employees.
Does she tell them they have to put a mask on? Is she required to?

Overflow rooms would not fix a staffing shortage. Also, maybe people run to the hospital for every little thing, as you say, but thosr people are discharged home from the emergeny room. People are not admitted unless there is a problem that warrents an overnight hospital stay. They aren't admitting people for runny noses. My friend had a baby very recently and they kicked her and the baby out in less than 24 hours. They don't want you there unless you are sick or injured enough to be there. Hospitals aren't overrun because too many people go to the emergency room.

To be serious it should be a choice. There is no reason at this point to have a mandate when a new variant comes out for this or even the flu. This is never going away so we have to live with it. If people feel more comfortable wearing a mask, then they should do so.
Everyone’s comfortability varies. I have seen some people who just started going out to restaurants while others have been going to parties and packed places for a long time.
People should not be out and about if they are sick, plain and simple. Just like before this when we used to get sick because Mary or Bob decided they were fine and then got everyone else sick.
We also don’t know how each one of our bodies will react to Covid or any virus or illness. The more stress worrying about what could happen can easily get you sick too.
What are the mandates where you live? Are they as strict or are you given a choice how you want to take care of yourself?

I would love to see stats of whom is in what hospital with what illness and what they are considering overrun. The numbers were always skewed in NY.

Re: Mask mandate clarification

So to be clear, for those that feel masks are the right thing to do because someone can die from catching covid or the flu from you...you are ok with masking all the time, going forward, forever?
Because covid will always be here. As will the flu.
And like you said, someone can catch those and die of either of those .
So in your mind, masks at all times in stores etc should be a permanent thing?
Not being snarky....genuinely curious .
Because prior to 2020, nobody masked for anything and it was never a thought...flu season, stomach bug season, etc.

I would love to know the difference too since they all want to continue to be vaccinated, which they are saying will keep them out of the hospital and the chance of death. So why wouldn’t you mask before when you got the flu shot since there was a chance if still getting the flu even if only milder.

Definitely not - my FIL went last week for something and typically gets admitted because he has a myriad of health issues and they sent him home rather quickly.

Hospitals are being overrun by very sick people - not just Covid right now. My friend says people are waiting a long time for beds (not just because of Covid).

Exactly so they will try and get you to believe all patients are Covid patients when there might be some but it could be overrun just by others with other issues.

Yes. Simply put yes. If the past couple years haven’t been eye opening for you I don’t know that we can see each other’s side. So yes. If it means one person doesn’t get sick from me then yes. I will wear my mask. I don’t understand the outrage. Yes there are mandates where I am. My husband works retail and deals with this every day. It’s miserable. My point of view is that we have learned a lot, been through a lot. Are masks that terrible if wearing that mask could potentially save one life? Is that not with being a little uncomfortable. Yes stay home when you’re sick but as everyone points out relentlessly on this site you may not know you’re sick. So wear a mask. That is at least doing SOMETHING we can do for each other.

Thanks for answering. I was curious.
I don't see people wearing masks indefinitely.
I can't see that 15 or 20 years from now we'll still be wearing masks to walk to a table in a restaurant or shop.
I also don't like the idea of kids being masked in school all day since they are at the lowest risk from dying of these illnesses.
But everyone has their own opinions on the matter.

I do wonder though...3 years ago when we had bad flu outbreaks did it ever cross your mind to wear a mask to protect others even if you did not feel sick?

She also said almost everyone who is admitted is unvaccinated. She had no reason to be lying. She’s actually pretty laid back about Covid (vaccinated but never wears a mask, lives her regular 2019 life) and is currently concerned about the most recent wave.

That is just horrible and that is why there should not be a mandate. Let it be optional and not cause all of this to the employees.
Does she tell them they have to put a mask on? Is she required to?

Yes, she is required to. Plus she wants people to wear a mask. She’s not the picture of health and is at risk for severe Covid and dying even though she is vaccinated due to preexisting conditions.

No. Three years ago wearing a mask during flu season didn’t cross my mind. But quite honestly I am very much a creature of habit so it wasn’t in my routine. Kids wearing masks don’t bother me as much. I’m sure that’s bc they don’t bother my kids. They’re pretty go with the flow like me. But that’s my point about the changes the last two years. Masks were required. So I had to wear one. Then I thought why haven’t we always worn masks in public during flu season? Especially after my kids got that flu a few years ago and my youngest son’s fever was .1 degree away from hospital admission for 5 days. 104.9 for five days when the rotation of Tylenol and ibuprofen would start to wear off. It was absolutely miserable.

It’s also a quality of life issue. I don’t wear my mask because it’s “annoying” I do it in protest because we can’t live like this forever. It’s endemic. It’s here to stay. Masking the human race from here to eternity isn’t practical. We have vaccines and therapeutics have come a long way in just two years. It’s time we stopped using the mask as virtue-signaling.

If I believed masks truly stopped the virus, I would be more understanding. But I feel requiring it is more to make prople feel better and to make it seem like government is doing something. I know many people love masks and believe they are amazing and I don’t want to debate it. But they kinda gross me out - like at work - people taking a mask on and off a million times a day and touching all their own germs and bacteria and then touching documents, doors, etc - its disgusting. Yes we wash hands but not every few minutes.

And also, my child suffers from SEVERE headaches every day from 8 hours of being in school with a mask. They do not get breaks and the teachers are so strict and between lack of oxygen and severe dry eyes, my kid is suffering. I just ordered that breathable one Nell recommended so we’ll see.

But I am no longer going to mask in stores. Im not sick. So far in 2 days nobody has bothered me. But if they did, I of course would not scream at a poor employee. I would just leave.

I don’t see it as virtue signaling. I can sacrifice my comfortability if it means someone may not get seriously ill or die. It’s not that uncomfortable. If you want to call me a virtue signaler or whatever I’m ok with that. There are worse things to be.

Then you do you, boo. But the truth remains is that the vaccine + therapeutics + natural immunity is what will return us to “normal”. Masks (particularly in the way they’re utilized by the general public) ain’t sh1t.

I haven't gone out yet- going out today- but my husband tried the breathable mask and said it is amazing. So I do hope it works for your child so they don't have to suffer with headaches everyday anymore.

Yup, my husband said the same. They didn't end up firing anyone (smaller hospital) and have the staff. Yesterday & Monday the ER was over capacity. They are starting to get worried. He's also been pretty lax about things (opposite of me LOL) but is now getting worried. His worry is not "we're going to get covid and die" because I think few of us really think that anymore...but more that numbers will rise and the gov't will try to put all these mandates in place again. THAT'S why we're worried. We don't want mandates/shutdowns, etc again.

I don’t understand something. Are we now also saying that the vaccine doesn’t prevent serious illness or death? Because something like 95% of Nassau county residents are vaccinated. Hospitals can not be getting overrun by the remaining 5% of unvaccinated (many of whom have probably already had covid). can someone explain it to me? The vaccine can’t even be preventing serious illness if the hospitals are already overrun.

That's a good question actually.

Even if every single one of the 5% unvaxed in Nassau County got Covid (which they won't) but let's say they did, out of those people, the GREAT majority will recover at home with no need for the hospital.

So who is overrunning these hospitals?

Exactly!

Either the hospitals have just as many vaxxed patients, or they are lying about them being overrun.

People at my job have been very sick with covid in the past few months - all vaxxed. None of us dirty selfish unvaxxed have missed a day of work. Anecdotal? Yep. But you cannot tell me that what I am seeing with my own eyes is not true.
