Massapequa is beautiful. It was definitely one of our top choices for towns but DH wasn't happy with the property sizes for the $$. So we moved to West Islip, which I absolutely love.
Our exact story!

There's also: west Islip neighborhood page But that one takes time to get in. And you have to have the fact that you live in WI public on your profile. Admin is strict lol but that's another great group. All have similar info
My fav is: the people of west Islip. A lot less drama and very informative. Also admin heads up a lot of charity work in the neighborhood that you can choose to be a part of. I love it!

I live in North Massapequa, but Farmingdale school district. We're very happy where we are. Quiet neighborhood, great neighbors, close to everything. We've been here for about 8 years now and have no complaints.
If you're looking in the area, just make sure you do your zoning research. Massapequa is divided out into 4 school districts - Massapequa, Plainedge, Farmingdale, and Amityville. So of course you'll want to know which one you're buying into.
How is Plainedge? That keeps popping up in my search.
I'm a Plainedge graduate, I have friends who work in the district, and many friends who have kids currently in the district. It's a great school district!
I am also a Plainedge HS graduate. I'm not sure if this is a priority for you or not but only about 54% of my graduating class went to 4 year colleges (I actually remember being shocked at that percentage so I've always remembered it). There were also limited Honors and AP classes mostly because it's a smaller district and less demand. I took all AP and Honors classes though and had a good education for the most part.
This is often a financial decision. I know many that went to 2 year colleges that transferred their third year to private and state schools and are very successful. I wish I had done the same.
Yes this! Would have saved me a lot in loans! Oh well you live and learn.
To answer the OP Massapequa is a nice town, we looked there when we were house hunting. But as a PP mentioned there are four different SD's within Massapequa so just be aware of that in case you only want to look in certain districts. I can give you feedback on Plainedge- My sister bought in Plainedge schools and she has had a good experience so far w/ the schools.

I have many friends who went to plainedge and one of those friends is actually a HS teacher in the district. It would be my personal preference of districts that massapequa has.

Massapequa
I grew up in Massapequa and live in Massapequa Park. We love it here and are happy to raise our family here. Love that there are a ton of choices for shopping, close to parkways, great parks and schools.
One of the things you'll find with Plainedge Schools is that your taxes might be a bit higher than if you were in Massapequa Schools. Massapequa has the Sunrise Mall and more businesses to offset some of the tax burden. That's what we found when we were house hunting and looked at houses in Massapequa with Plainedge schools.

Re: Massapequa
I moved to Massapequa park in 9th grade and lived there till I was 12. I love it and wish my husband would but a house there but he want to live so far east.
There is drugs in every school in long island. I never did drugs neither did my friends. I found the rich kids did more drugs than the middle class kids.
The schools are really good though. out of a class of 500 at the time the first 75 kids or so had over a 100 average. There are alot of AP classes and alot of people went to very good colleges.
The only thing I find weird about the schools is that in 9th grade you are in your own school. not in the real HS bc there isn't enough room. Some people may like that though bc you don't get bullied by older kids.
There are 6 elementary schools that go into one JR high .
Be careful at what sd you are in I am partial to Massapequa . Plainedge is good aswell but small (They aren't in has high of sports divisions as MHS) Farmingdale is large too, not sure if they are AS good as Pequa. "East Massapequa" is usually Amityville school district.
good luck!

Me too actually.
I LOVED Massapequa for the proximity to things, the schools are top rated in Massapequa, great restaurants, waterfront...just loved it. We have friends and family who live there who couldn't be happier with the schools and athletic programs. But DH had this thing about living in Nassau and, when we were looking, the inventory was very low. What we could get for our money was not much. I'm happy in WI for sure but I really loved Massapequa.

True. Some did, some didn't. I don't recall the exact number of those that went to Nassau but of my few friend that did this, it took them a lot longer to graduate college. This was my own experience though. This wasn't also in 1998 so things may have changed.

Is it steeped in Native American history?
I never get tired of when he says that. It's especially funny because it comes from Alec Baldwin, too!

Re: Massapequa
LOVE Massapequa!!!! DH grew up in Massapequa Park and we bought our house in the Massapequa Woods area. We love the proximity to everything and all of the restaurants and the town itself. I love my neighbors and those with school aged children really like the schools. DH went to Massapequa HS and drugs were always a problem there but he never was into that.

The bad:
depending on the specific area, Massapequa is prime target for the spread of the toxic plume from Bethpage :
