Massapequa school district

Can anyone give me any positive or negative experiences with the Massapequa School District?

I don't know anything about it. I'm not concerned about test scores, I want to learn about real life experiences but don't know anyone with kids actually IN the schools.

Thanks!!

All the kids in DD's preschool class are in the district (except DD, lol). Is there anything specific you want to know? I've never heard anything bad from any of the moms. They all have older kids in the elementary schools and jr high.

Honestly, I'm just trying to get a feel for it. As a teacher, test scores mean nothing to me. I know they're not a true judge of a district, school or teacher. We are now thinking of moving there but I know absolutely nothing. I have friends who live in the district, but their kids aren't school age yet.

I know that the parents all love the elementary schools that their DCs go to (most go to Mckenna or East Lake). I don't know much about the high school except that it looks nice on the inside (DD has her dance recitals there).

I suppose I'm not too much help. But I've never heard the parents complain. We are just out of the district by a few blocks and I love this neighborhood. In a few weeks we're moving back to the town DH and I grew up in (also a great place) but I'm bummed to leave these neighbors. We're in Massapequa Park north of Sunrise.

Re: Massapequa school district

Going off my coworker who went to school there and has a niece there.

Heavy drugs abuse.
I believe that comes with a lot of areas and some are known and some arent.

Outside of that, its a very good SD.

I think that is a problem with the HS. However I'm pretty sure that is a problem with most of LI unfortunately.

Re: Massapequa school district

I went to massapequa highschool. my sister went to massapequa schools from 5th grade and all my friends went there from kindergarden. It is a VERY good school district and very competitive ins many sports as well as academics. there are tons of AP classes offered in HS. i graduated with 500 people and the first 75 people had over a 100 gpa.

There are 6 elementary schools 1 jr 1 9th grade center and 1 HS.

The only thing i dont like about the district is the 9th grade is by themselves now. but you could look at it in a positive way too because the freshmen dont get tortured my seniors and since the HS has an Open campus for lunch the little 9th graders do not. what i dont like about 9th graders being in a separate area is if they are on any JV teams they have to take a bus over to the HS to practice and for games . but other then that it is a very good district. if you want any more info you can message me.

That i do agree with there is a lot of drug use because you have a lot of pretty wealthy kids in the shores, but in LI in general you get a lot of drug use in HS.

My parents live there as does my sister and cousin. it's a pretty decent district. We chose not to buy there bc We have heard of drug problems, and see large groups of kids hanging out on the streets (parking lots) at night. a huge pet peeve of mine. I don't know how much thought to put into the whole drug problem though. That could happen anywhere, and things of course will change as time goes on.

Not to sound snarky, but what area did you buy in that teenagers DON'T hang out in parking lots? I've seen it all over LI. Heck me and my friends used to do that everywhere.

I have never noticed such large groups of kids hanging around like that. Besides massapequa, we looked in syosset, plainview, and old bethpage

Re: Massapequa school district

I think in todays day & age most high schools have drug issues. I was in high school over 10 years ago, went to a suburban district that was considered excellent, and there was everything from acid to weed to heroin.

If your kid is going to do drugs then they will do drugs, you as a parent have to do what you can to prevent it and keep a tab on whats going on. We live in a world where drugs are glamorized to a certain extent.

I am a product of that school system and it was great. Are there drug problems? Umm that is alllll over even the private schools. I am a high school teacher for another district and seen so much over the years.
So honestly that stuff and issues are wide spread. As far as the district I feel my education was excellent.

Re: Massapequa school district

I work with 2 guys who went to Massapequa high school and they are in their young to mid-20's. They both went to excellent universities and are very bright. I'm sure there are some kids in the districts surrounding Massapequa (seafood, wantagh, merrick) that do drugs also. You just have to raise your kids right and hope they don't go down that road.
