Re: maternal fetal specialist
Please, please PLEASE do not take this the wrong way, but how do you know you want to see a maternal fetal specialist if you don't know what they do?
Now to answer your question...
Maternal-Fetal Medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology, where high risk pregnancies are evaluated.
Some indications for referral to Maternal Fetal Medicine are:
Medical complications during the course of pregnancy.
Previous pregnancy loss or stillbirth.
History of premature labor, premature rupture of the membranes, premature birth.
Previous pregnancy complicated by a birth defect or genetic abnormality.
History of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney or heart problem, or seizure disorder.
History of drug or alcohol abuse.

Re: maternal fetal specialist
I replied on the IF board, but in addition to what the pp listed, they treat women who are carrying multiples. Also, they are referred to as perinatologists.

Re: maternal fetal specialist
A Maternal Fetal specialist is an OB who specialized in High risk pregnancies. Like a previous poster mentioned, they are also called Perinatologists. A MFM consult is usually suggested by your OBGYN (they need to refer you to one, you just cant go and make an appointment) and from what you mentioned, I am sure your OBGYN will agree that you probably will need to see one.
Your questions are very VALID!!!!! Dont worry at all!

Yeah check with your ob. You just want to make sure that the appointment with MFM is covered by insurance.
