maternity clothes buy or borrow

So did you buy or borrow from friends?

I was really hoping to borrow a bunch, but as it turns out either the ppl I know that have kids weren't pregnant at the same time of years as me so clothes won't fit...or they aren't the same size, or already are pregnant and can't share.

I'm kind of bummed....

I say buy if you plan to have more kids, but if it's your last I would borrow or only buy what you need. I tried to remember I didn't need a whole wardrobe. Just some nice staples and the ocassional cute splurge. I also have an adorable resale shop by my house called Lil Muffins that specializes in only kids/baby/maternity products so I lucked out. I got jeans, tops, sweaters, dresses, and so on for about $3-7 a piece and loved the savings. Emmy also has a lot from them and my Mom went nuts there for toys, clothing, and furniture for her house. I'm in MI so that won't help.......the point through all this blubberChat Icon is check resale shops and you can save a lot

I never really thought of that! Where do you live? that lil muffins store sounds so cute!
You are right, if I am having more kids I'll have to wear them again...I guess I should invest in some staple pieces...good advice!

I was going to buy a few staple items. Then if I can borrow a few things from a friend.

Then again, I'm not sure with this DD Chest, I can borrow much of anything from anyone (assuming it's just gonna get bigger) I prob need to go up a few sizes just for these ladies!

With my DD I did both - I borrowed and bought. Lucikly I am the same season this time around, so I can wear alot of my old maternity stuff, but I plan on buying a couple of new things here and there.

Target has inexpensive maternity clothes...I plan on getting some things there, especially for the summer months.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

i had to buy.

i love shopping ~ plus i needed to try on so many things until i found things i liked in the right size.

friends have offered and ive accepted certain pieces but i didnt depend on any of my past preggo friends to donate their things to me.

if you shop at places like h&m, old navy, target ~ i didnt feel as tho i was making a huge investment in my wardrobe.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

I say both - I borrowed BAGS of clothes and only a few items fit or were for the right season. Plus, when you buy you feel more like yourself. Every time I wear the borrowed stuff it feels "borrowed" - even though it is mostly brand new clothes! I agree, stick to old navy, target, and H&M. I have a destination maternity right up the road from me, so I actually was there a lot, but they can be pricey. The GAP has great stuff too - I wear one of their tank tops underneath my shirts literally everyday. I also like their maternity underwear :)

I bought all of mine b/c I didnt really have anyone to borrow from.

I was pregnant through the end of the winter, spring and then summer.

I have five cool weather outfits
five warm weather outfits
one fancy top
one nice dress
one bathing suit

If I spent $300 on maternity clothes I would be surprised, it is probably less.

I know that sounds like a nightmare for some people but it is similar to my regular wardrobe where I wear the same items week to week.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

I am lucky enough to have a friend that I borrowed a bunch of stuff from. We have very different taste in clothes so I ended up buying a bunch of tops. She did give me a bunch of capri pants and hanging out/pj pants that have been priceless!

With the warm weather and 2 months to go I need to go out and get a couple short sleeved shirts. Most of what I have are 3/4 sleeve.

I have been extremely lucky in that even though I am 33 weeks I have not had to wear any maternity clothes as of yet. I have borrowed some pants that are a size or two bigger from friends/family that have gotten me through this pregnancy so far. I think it also depends on what your work attire requires. I can wear jeans to work so I did not need a whole new work wardrobe.I just wore my borrowed jeans/pants with my regular shirts.
I say borrow as much as you possibly can.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

I bought - I am hoping to have a second, and I have to dress professionally for work (I normally wear a full suit every day) so I needed specific looking clothes - that, and I'm picky.

I would say both--I borrowed bags of clothes that have helped me so much--but also bought some staples like nice pants, fancy shirts, bathing suit, a pair of capri pants, etc.

I needed some shirts for "cooler" weather but didn't necessarily want to buy them since I'm going to be at my biggest in the summer months--those borrowed shirts helped a lot!

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

The first time I bought everything. All of my friends were pregnant with me so I couldn't borrow from anyone. I was constantly shopping...I don't even want to calculate how much I spent but I know it was more than a couple hundred. Chat Icon

This time I borrowed everything I could, but I still had to buy a few things because the season are completely opposite from my first pregnancy.. so my summer clothes are all too small and my winter clothes were all too big.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

I bought everything for myself, I didn't really have anyone to borrow from. Plus, even if I did it is hard enough to find things that fit me right so I probably would have ended up buying anyway.

I bought.
I really have nobody to borrow from and everyone I know is shorter than me so it would be an issue with pants etc

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

First pregnancy I bought. since I am carryign through the exact same seasons, I did not need to buy, but a VERY cool LIFer allowed me to borrow her clothes to change it up a little bit.

Re: maternity clothes buy or borrow

...and I still say a Maternity Consignment shop would be great to have around here.
I spent so much money on clothes- some of which I am only going to wear once or twice.
It would be great to be able to sell them- and great to be able to buy gently used maternity wear!
